Does Anyone Care About the Legislature?

Does anyone even care anymore about the West Virginia Legislature? According to our State Constitution, the Legislature only convenes for sixty calendar days within the first three months of each year. It is unfortunate to me that while the Legislature convenes next week, there have been scant postings on this website regarding the upcoming session. There have been few mentions of the session in any of the major publications in our State.

I watched WVU trounce Oklahoma, too. I even had an ongoing friendly rivalry with my boss (an OU graduate) about the game. I am actively researching the upcoming lawsuit by WVU against Rich Rodriguez. But, the business of the State Legislature is of much truer importance to our citizenry than the outcome of the Tostito's Fiesta Bowl.

So, I write this diary entry to encourage the moderators of this blog as well as its avid readers to begin posting more entries on the legislative session. This website has become, in my opinion, too heavily interested in non-local election coverage.

So, here's my contribution: An editorial in the Charleston Gazette reminds us that there are major renovations taking place at the Capitol building. It notes that copper-wired boxes which broadcast the session were being replaced by online video streaming. Unfortunately, as the editorial staff says, the stream will only be accessible by legislators and their staffs. Efforts to open the legislative sessions for public streaming have been blocked. I encourage you to read what the Gazette believes is the reason for this decision. It is quite noteworthy.

I'd love to have more diaries on the West Virginia legislature. I'm looking forward to reading many of yours. :)

I'm totally serious about that. You know I've always liked your diaries here and at the Big Orange Satan. Part of the problem now is it is a slow time of year with state and local issues because people are waiting for the session to begin to write about those issues. So the lack of state stories now and the bigger number of presidential race stories has more to do to events falling on the calendar as they do and us reacting to them. But I'd love to see more state related diaries, particularly ones related to the areas most of interest to you and your concerns. People tend to write most about what interests them throughout the state blogs. I tend to write a lot about torture and there's a West Virginia connection because of Senator Rockefeller and also Lynddie England. Clem is old as dirt and lives a hermit like existence on top of a mountain so we're fortunate that he doesn't write about leaves falling or how he yells at the wildlife ("Hey you deer, get out of my yard!")

But all of us have day jobs and only so many hours to devote to blogging so it's important that if you see something that needs to be done, jump in and do it. That's true throughout the blogosphere, even the giant sites like Daily Kos.

This isn't my blog. This is a group blog
