A great day for democracy

What happened?

Here at West Virginia Blue (see the user diaries over on the right-hand side bar), modernamerica thinks it's all about what Clinton did and  Wabi-Sabi questions the "epic proportions" of her victory.

At DailyKos, diarist rimjob has a thorough analysis (with lots of pretty charts!) on reasons why the polls were so very wrong.

I get all my news from the Internet. For the TV-watchers out there, do you agree with Kevin Drum and Josh Marshall that older woman (in particular) were responding to the final 24-hours of media coverage of Clinton?

What next?

Whatever the reason for Clinton's unexpected victory, I'm thrilled by the outcome. I have no major emotional investment in the outcome of the primaries -- I'll happily support Edwards, Obama or Clinton in the general. The delegate counts actually mean something. For a political junkie like me, this is incredibly exciting.

Keeping our candidates in the news, turning out record numbers of voters, meaningfully involving more states in the process, these are all great things for democracy.

After two states, we have four candidates who have won one (4.00 / 2)
and every single candidate has lost one.

I Agree With Rachel Maddow (4.00 / 1)
Rachel Maddow blames the whole thing on Chris Matthews, and obviously the press. At least thats what got me feeling very sympathetic with Hillary. I just hate it when the press tells me whats going to happen. Check her thoughts out here at Crooks and Liars.

wvblueguy -- I agree that's the most likely primary factor (0.00 / 0)
The press feeding frenzy makes Clinton look human and sympathetic. The news cycles were all about her. It didn't help any that the Obama and, then, Edwards responses to the likability and "tearing up" episodes were both less than stellar.

Three other factors worth a few points each (are probably (a) superior field, (b) absentee ballots, and (c) order of names on ballot.

If back-lash was worth 5-6 points and the other items 2-3 points each that would just about account for the "inaccurate" polls, wouldn't it?

One thing I love about the election no matter who won the primary... (4.00 / 2)
Democratic turnout in both Iowa and New Hampshire was much much higher than Republican turnout.

And the independents in both states both voted hugely Democratic, which is not just good news but great news!

That bodes very well for us Democrats in the general election!

I just hope and pray that all the national polls aren't as inaccurate as the ones in New Hampshire, because we can't take another 4 years of Republican rule no matter whom their nominee is.

Enough said.
