Not to pick too much on Sen. Hillary Clinton , but this email I received yesterday pretty much exemplified a problem her campaign has had throughout the race.

The campaign here in West Virginia has hit the ground running.  Everywhere I go, I
meet West Virginians who are excited about supporting Hillary on May 13. But we need
all the help we can get to bring home a victory for Hillary in West Virginia.

We're looking for volunteers who can help knock on doors, make phone calls and come
into our offices.  Will you sign up to help Hillary in West Virginia?

Hillary has real solutions to America's challenges. She'll end the war in Iraq, put
the economy back to work for the middle class again, make our nation energy
independent, and provide health care not just to some or to most, but to all
Americans.

Here in West Virginia we will be doing everything we can to help Hillary win the
nomination, but we can't do it without you.

Hillary is the only candidate ready to lead on day one in the White House, and a
victory in West Virginia will be critical to get her there.  Let's do everything we
can to show the nation that the Mountain State is Clinton Country.

Sincerely,

Talley Sergent
West Virginia State Director
Hillary Clinton for President

West Virginia held its county conventions on Saturday. I received this email on Monday.

As someone commented on my frontpage post at MyDD:

Obama has shown again and again and again that his campaign gets the process of the elections and he is setting up his people accordingly. He has a clear plan to deal with states both favorable and unfavorable to him, and Clinton is evidencing ignorance of the workings of the various state methods, probably because she assumed they wouldn't matter.

That's a big failing of the Clinton campaign.

Despite trailing Clinton in the polls in West Virginia by a large margin, the Obama campaign has not written off West Virginia. Instead volunteers and Obama staff have worked for weeks, some volunteers even working for months. Meanwhile our reports (see post below) show very few Clinton people showed up at the county conventions, which were open to all Democrats and independents. West Virginia has mattered to the Obama campaign even though with his insurmountable lead for the primary he doesn't need our delegates as much as Clinton needs them.

UPDATE: I heard tonight (April 16) that Clinton's people are upset by the convention results. Look, the West Virginia Democratic Party did an excellent job of notifying people about them in advance. The Clinton campaign could have had their people working the phones to have their supporters there too. The Clinton campaign has only themselves to blame for not paying attention to the state earlier.

Pocahontas County Convention (4.00 / 1)
We had around fifty people show up at our Pocahontas County convention, predominantly Obama supporters. All nominations and voting procedures were carried out correctly. Obama supporters were anticipating a large number of Clinton supporters to be at the convention, and organized accordingly. They were as surprised as anyone when they were the majority. All will even out at the State Convention according to the primary vote.

Thanks for the report.

Second Ballot Rules (4.00 / 1)
As I understand them, West Virginia's bound delegates to the national convention are only bound for the first ballot. Should a second ballot be necessary, as I will believe it will, West Virginia's delegates would be free to vote or change as they pleased. Since most of the county conventions sent Obama delegates to Charleston, I would hope that the state convention will produce delegates who would considering changing to Obama on the second ballot.

Since Senator Clinton said pledged delegates really aren't pledged, by her rules they could switch to Obama on the first round - if they wanted to play by her rules and not West Virginia's.
