Clinton's campaign troubles in West Virginia

by: Carnacki

Wed Apr 23, 2008 at 14:12:35 PM EDT

As I've mentioned  for months, the grassroots and Democratic activists have worked for months in West Virginia for Sen.Barack Obama's presidential bid while the Sen. Hillary Clinton campaign has lagged.

The worst sign of it occurred with the first email from Clinton's state director, Talley Sergent.

The campaign here in West Virginia has hit the ground running.  Everywhere I go, I
meet West Virginians who are excited about supporting Hillary on May 13. But we need
all the help we can get to bring home a victory for Hillary in West Virginia.
We're looking for volunteers who can help knock on doors, make phone calls and come
into our offices.  Will you sign up to help Hillary in West Virginia?
Click here to sign up to join Hillary's West Virginia team.

That email came two days after West Virginia Democrats held county conventions across the state - conventions where Obama delegates were selected in big majorities to go to the state conventions. In Berkeley County alone, 50 of the 52 delegates picked were Obama supporters.

Why? Because for months the Obama supporters had been meeting, canvassing, registering new voters and phonebanking.

Meanwhile, the Clinton campaign doesn't launch until after the county conventions and a week before voter registration deadline for the primary.

So how exactly has the Clinton campaign "hit the ground running?"

From HillaryClinton.com's West Virginia page:

• I signed up months ago to volunteer for Hillary here in WV.  I have never been contacted.  I am concerned with the BO presence I am seeing in Charleston and so little Hillary presence.  Let's get things going for Hillary!

volunteering
I also signed up a while back but decided that I would sign up agian. I think that Hillary needs our help and look forward to helping as much as I possibly can and would encourage evryone to do the same. I have vounteered time in '04 and '06 and I had a great time talking to people in my community and meeting people from around my county. I encourage people to volunteer thier time by calling people, going door to door, or just helping get the word out at work. I know Hillary is prepared to work for the people of West Virginia, but right now we needed to work for her and making sure that she get the nomination in August.

FORMER WV VISTA VOLUNTEER for Hillary
I, too, have tried (in vain) to help jump-start the WV campaign for Hillary from afar.  I was a VISTA in Richwood, WV (Little Laurel) and Parkersburg and returned to Nicholas County with the Kerry campaign to find "too little, too late"...so, with DNC Chair Howard Dean's initiative to get grassroots things going in WV so that the DEMS could win WV for the Presidential 2008 race, I've been willing, able & ready to help in WV with phone(from at home and contacting those I already know there), offering to go there (& bring NYers who know that Hillary won over even Republicans with the great work she's done here- including for 9/11 victims & SURVIVORS = who are often forgotten) & trying to get HRC & buttons, posters, literature, bumper stickers & signs to WV BEFORE anyone else does.....I was told to buy stuff on line & send it - but since my funds are very limited, I'm asking that everyone push for getting out those signs & bumper stickers EVEN IF HRC cannot make it to Richwood, WV for a rally - which would be a perfect setting to talk about rural America in Appalachia......Let's take the WV campaing out of JUST CITIES & liberal little towns & get (the usual venues, if any) & get RUGGED to where people need a GREAT PRESIDENT LIKE HILLARY = into the hollers of WV!!!....GOOD LUCK, TALLEY - I hope you are the one!   Cindy, NYC

volunteering for Hillary in West Virginia
I took the advice of fellow posters and have signed up again as a volunteer.  My son and I are also traveling to PA this weekend to help in Pittsburgh.  We also want to be active here in the Charleston area.  I would like to organize some honk/wave groups at major intersections at least for the weekend/Monday before the May 13th primary.  Plus, can we get some signs around Charleston and at some other key locations in the state?  I just spent 8 hours on the road (traveling in WV) and did not see one Hillary sign.  BO signs are all over the east end of Charleston.  I don't mean to be negative, but I want those who quietly support Hillary to know that there is strong, active support for her in WV.  Thanks WV campaign staff for doing what you can.

o Help Hillary in WV
We should not take it for granted that Hillary will do exceedingly well in WV.  We should make every effort to ensure she has a landslide victory here in WV.  I try every day to reach out to someone here in WV.  The past 2 days I have had repair work done at my home and I have used those opportunities to talk about Hillary.  One guy put 2 Hillary stickers on his vehicle's bumper before he left!

I hope we get alot of out of state volunteers.  My son and I traveled to PA last weekend and canvassed neighborhoods in Pittsburgh.  We were glad to help there and will work hard here in our home state too.

That's not me picking the negative comments. That's all of the comments.

I've yet to receive an email to organize Clinton supporters in the Eastern Panhandle.

No More Money to Obama from me... (0.00 / 0)
Until he starts taking the West Virginia primary seriously. All that time spent in Pittsburgh and eastern Ohio, but did he even once take the 20 minute drive to Weirton, WV to visit one of the most unemployed counties in the US? Nope. Did he stop at Weirton Steel to understand the plight of steelworkers who recently found out they aren't worth as much as Mexican or Taiwanese workers? Nope. Did he go to Charleston or Logan to try and heal racial divides following the kidnapping and torture of Megan Williams? Nope.

At my county convention in West Virginia, 40 of the 44 delegates elected to go to Charleston were Obama supporters. Democratic county chairmen and politicians are putting their reputations on the line to support Senator Obama, but does he do anything of substance in The Mountain State? Nope.

You know, Senator Obama wouldn't have lost southwestern PA so badly if he had simply visited Weirton, Wheeling, and Morgantown in West Virginia ONCE.

So, like I said... no more money until Senator Obama begins making substantive differences to his WV campaign.

I couldn't disagree more (4.00 / 1)
I'm really surprised by your comment. I'm not sure how active you are at the local level, but I've seen Obama's campaign having paid staffers here for weeks, with headquarters being opened up in different regions. There's paid regional and area people working to organize the volunteers. The Obama campaign has already invested quite a few resources in West Virginia.

It's WV... come back to reality (0.00 / 0)
All of the organizational skills in the world will not cause Senator Obama to win the WV Democratic Primary or turn it blue in November. WV is mired by racism, and unless and until Senator Obama visits every major part of West Virginia and shows people himself that he is capable, people like dozens of Democrats I know in the Northern Panhandle will vote for McCain.

"Never tell me the odds." Han Solo (4.00 / 1)
Here's reality. Many of us don't throw up our hands in despair and piss and moan and say 'I'm moving' instead of acknowledging that hard work is involved to bring progress. Some of us continue to push issues that don't even benefit us, but will benefit others instead even when people who would directly benefit (see if you recognize anyone from this) would rather run from the challenge.

Some of us work hard for the change we want. We see that in the Obama activists. They were told the odds were overwhelmingly in favor of Clinton winning the state, that the state is "too racist."

That didn't stop them.

You can either work to bring the change you want or you can surrender.

Then tell that to the candidate (0.00 / 0)
Tell Senator Obama to come to West Virginia and work to bring the change. People in Wheeling have put their lives on hold for the man, but he doesn't have the common courtesy to thank them with a brief personal visit? I could provide him with the most politically beneficial hour if he were to visit Wheeling. But, I fear that only Senator Clinton will be visiting the Northern Panhandle, and that would be a fatal mistake for Democrats.

invite him to a local event (0.00 / 0)
Invite him to a local event. If you haven't done so already, send him an invitation.

Seriously. I was told by a campaign staffer the campaign seriously considers all invitations.

The week of May 7-12 may be your best bet for getting him there. Plan an event (or find a suitable event already planned to piggy-bag on) and invite him. He might just surprise you and show up!

He's even got a place on his website just for invitations like this. There's a contact page:

http://my.barackobama.com/page...

And one of the links is for a "Non-Media Scheduling Request".

One more thing, Carnacki (0.00 / 0)
I didn't see the House of Delegates tell you that you don't have a right to work and live in West Virginia. That's exactly what Joe Delong, Rick Thompson, and the others did to me and thousands of others. Maybe if your personal and professional life were effected by the bigotry of DEMOCRATS in the WV Legislature, you'd be more inclined to leave the State as well. This isn't some stupid, selfish want --- IT'S OUR LIVES.

You're right. Peace, brother.

Huh? (4.00 / 1)
I'm not sure what you mean by nothing of substance happening with the Obama campaign in this state. There's a whole lot more to Obama's campaign than just Obama appearances.

Both Clinton and Obama have made one high profile visit to the state in roughly the same time period. Clinton has an advantage of being able to also send Bill and Chelsea, each of which made one visit.

You've seen the comments of Hillary volunteers--they're no organization here tapping volunteers. By comparison, there have been Obama groups -- fully supported by the campaign -- for many months. Sign up at my.barackobama.com and join some local W.Va. groups, you'll see there's a whole lot going on.

I've been amazed what kind of resources the campaign has put into a state they could just as easily write off. Obama has sent far, far more people to work here than Clinton. By comparison, Clinton has nothing visible going on at the field level. Heck, I'd bet Obama's got as many (if not more) paid people working on the ground in this area for the primary as Kerry did for the general in 2004.

If you hadn't noticed, Clem (0.00 / 0)
If you hadn't noticed, Clem, people from Wetzel County northward are starkly different from the rest of the State. Under the Manchin Administration, there is serious backlash in the Northern Panhandle against Charleston. People in Wheeling, Weirton, and Morgantown don't care about who visits Charleston because very, very few of us identify with Charleston, Huntington, or Beckley. Both campaigns have had plenty of opportunity to visit our area while they were campaigning in Ohio and PA. They have failed to do so, and I fear they will also fail in turning West Virginia blue in November.

[ Parent ]
Barack Obama in Beckley (4.00 / 1)
How soon we forget. Barack Obama in Beckley.

He also was in Charleston. That was less than a month ago.

Granted, he's not hit every county, but to say he's not appeared here is wrong. I say the Obama campaign has done a super job at investing resources in West Virginia.

When a man embarks upon a crime, he is morally guilty of any other crime which may spring from it. Sherlock Holmes.

We don't like Charleston or Beckley (0.00 / 0)
Okay, so the truth is out, Carnacki. People from Morgantown to Chester do NOT identify with Charleston. We identify with Pittsburgh. The impression here has been, and has greatly increased under Governor Manchin, that people would prefer the Northern Panhandle secede and join Ohio or PA. I hear the joke all the time, especially when I visit southern West Virginia. "Oh. You're from Wheeling? Well, that's not really West Virginia."

It will hurt both Democratic campaigns. Trust me.

Since WV isn't a "Big State" (4.00 / 1)
...the Clinton campaign doesn't think it matters....unless, of course, they win.
