A Crisis of Conscience

As the Democratic Party primary season draws to a close, with a nominee to be decided today (hopefully), I find myself in a crisis of conscience.  For the first time in my life, there is a real chance that a woman could be actually elected President of the United States, and I'm feeling a little guilty that I am hoping she is going to go down in a ball of flames.
Dandelion :: A Crisis of Conscience
Here are a few of the reasons why I have decided lay aside my feminist ideals to support Obama over Clinton:

1.  I try to never do what everyone else is doing, and apparently, in WV, supporting Obama is not cool-- unless you are a Super Delegate. I don't know why, but I was surprised to find that the people of WV would vote for a woman ahead of a black man.  The media treatment of this is fascinating.  Every report I've seen has tap-danced around the fact that the reason Hillary is so strong in WV is because she's white.
2.  I'm pretty sure that the idea would make Rush Limbaugh's head explode.
3.  I was seriously disappointed in the way that the Clinton campaign behaved over the Democratic Party Rules Committee decision about Michigan.  According to MSNBC, all this fuss is over 4 delegates, which is not enough to get Hillary the nomination.  The reaction is not appropriate to the situation.  Harold Ickes' hypocritical rant on Saturday was the only time I've ever had to sensor CNN for language in front of my young children when Dick Cheney wasn't speaking.

Hillary Clinton (4.00 / 1)
She did historic, ground breaking work for women running for president in the future and as the father of young daughters I'm glad for her historic run. I think her success had many reasons in West Virginia, including she campaigned here personally more than Obama did and she has a lot of good will built up from the Clinton administration with folks here.

When a man embarks upon a crime, he is morally guilty of any other crime which may spring from it. Sherlock Holmes.

WV Support for Hillary (4.00 / 2)
On Friday, we were listening to 58 Live on local talk radio, and a caller actually said on the air that he thought Senators Byrd and Rockefeller should be ashamed for supporting Obama when there was the choice of a white person on the ticket.  I agree that there are a lot of genuine Clinton fans in WV, but there are also a lot of people who believe that a white person is more entitled than a black person to be President.  As a thirty-something, progressive woman, I always looked forward to voting for the first woman president.  I guess I'm a little disappointed that the first real potential candidate doesn't really represent my interests.  I'm also disappointed that in 2008 we still have so far to go on issues of both race and gender in WV.  I am surprised to hear people of my own generation expressing outrage that our party leadership is supporting Obama when, as one person put it, "the people are so obviously in support of Hillary."  I am suspicious that a lot of the people are supporting Hillary for the wrong reason.
