Mitt Romney and Rudy Giuliani have been the Republican presidential hopefuls most favored by West Virginia donors, but Democrat John Edwards has raised more in the Mountain State than all other declared 2008 presidential candidates combined.
Edwards, the 2004 running mate of John Kerry, collected $72,100 from West Virginia contributors as of March 31, the latest Federal Election Commission filings show.
A former senator from North Carolina, Edwards benefited greatly from a Charleston fundraiser held March 29. Three-fourths of his West Virginia funds came in on or after that event, his first visit of the campaign to the state.
Charleston lawyer Scott Segal is among Edwards' top West Virginia donors, along with other members of the plaintiffs' bar, including Jim Humphreys and Marvin Masters, according to the nonpartisan Center for Responsive Politics. Other contributors identified by the group's analysis of the FEC report include Delegate Nancy Guthrie, D-Kanawha, and former state Democratic Party co-chairman Steve White.
Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., trailed Edwards in the Democratic field with $10,750 from West Virginians. In-state donations totaled $8,752 for Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois. Sen. Joe Biden of Delaware received $2,300 - from a bet-hedging Humphreys - while New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson received a $700 contribution.
The Carnacki/buhdydharma 2008 ticketed pushed by jeffinalabama received $0. ;)
