Big Daddy Sen. Robert C. Byrd

West Virginia political history question

(I've bumped this back to the top because the National Archives came through and I have an answer.  See the comments... - promoted by PDAWV)

It turns out I can't write html to save my life so I've emailed the pics to Clem.  -pdawv

Let's see who can win this virtual scavanger hunt...

I've got one of those questions that isn't so easy to answer with teh awesome Google... after all, it involves events that happened not just in the pre-YouTube era, but way back in the last millenium! ;-)

Back in the days when the esteemed Robert Byrd was a mere Rep., not a Sen., West Virginia had six congressional districts (Wikipedia tells me that much). What I haven't been able to figure out is:

What were the congressional district boundaries when W.Va. had 6, 5, and 4 congressional districts?

A list of counties in each district is fine (I can produce a map from that). Actual maps score a bonus point. A link to an online source is worth another bonus point. Admission of visiting an offline information repository (what were those things called? that's right... libraries) loses all geek credibility, but is otherwise admissable.

Good question... (4.00 / 2)
I'm not sure the boundaries, but I know in the early 60's the small town of Paden City had 2 congressional reps because Tyler and Wetzel Counties split the town and each county was in a separate district.

I think Ken Hechler represented Tyler and Arch Moore was the Wetzel side.

My grandfather was mayor at the time, and they were able to make many town improvements including a swimming pool and water treatment thanks to having the highest per capita Congressional representation in the country.

:-)

In a good conversation everyone speaks.  In a great conversation some even listen.

Trying (4.00 / 1)
First of all, I'd just like to say that the internets have let me down.  I've tried.  The best I can do in to go to the Kan Pub Lib downtown and try to get my hands on one of the ancient Blue Books.  You should know that I called the national Archives to ask them, and some guy named Russ is sending me maps from '53, '63, and '73.  He refused to scan them and email them.  So snail-mail.  It's no wonder Benjamin Gates was able to steal the Dec of Ind in that movie.

Secondly, Wabi-Sabi:  Are you and yours connected to the Tyler county area?  I grew up in Middlebourne.

Winners! (4.00 / 1)
We have winners to this contest. Not very geeky winners, but winners none-the-less.

No one was able to find the information online. So, if you looked, don't feel bad. No one else could find it online either.

First, thanks goes to reader GS for sending a list of counties in each of the 4 districts from his copy of the 1980 WV Blue Book. Thank you GS! Well done.

Next, major kudos to WVPDA for providing scanned maps of the 6, 5, and 4 district configurations.

In the next few days I'll load up the maps, prepare the remaining county lists and put up that post we were looking for. Then teh awesome Google can serve it up for the next person trying to answer this question!
