West Virginia Congressional District Historical Maps

For starters, a big thank you goes out to DS, his anonymous friend, WVPDA and an anonymous reference librarian for providing historical maps. (I could still use the 1980 redistricting map... unless it's identical to the 1990 one.)

If you're interested in actual maps I prepared the video from, or still shots from the video, it's all available at the West Virginia Blue Flickr photostream.

Here's a short-hand version of the history of congressional district per county:

County - 1953 - 1963 - 1973 - 2003
Barbour - 2 - 2 - 2 - 1
Berkeley - 2 - 2 - 2 - 2
Boone - 6 - 3 - 3 - 3
Braxton - 3 - 1 - 3 - 2
Brooke - 1 - 1 - 1 - 1
Cabell - 4 - 4 - 4 - 3

Clay - 3 - 3 - 3 - 2
Doddridge - 3 - 1 - 1 - 1
Fayette - 3 - 5 - 2 - 3
Gilmer - 3 - 1 - 3 - 1

Hampshire - 2 - 2 - 2 - 2
Hancock - 1 - 1 - 1 - 1

Harrison - 3 - 1 - 1 - 1
Jackson - 4 - 4 - 3 - 2

And, below the break, a longer version of counties per district per re-districting. (Whew!)

Please note... the transcription from historical maps to the lists below (and pictures in the video above) was all done by hand. Please let me know if you spot any errors so I can fix them!

name that tune! (x6) (4.00 / 1)
Even if your knowledge of political history is weak, here's a chance to prove your music trivia mojo!

How many of the six music samples in this video can you correctly identify by artist and song title?

Now I remember what I was supposed to do! D'oh!

When a man embarks upon a crime, he is morally guilty of any other crime which may spring from it. Sherlock Holmes.

No worries... (4.00 / 1)
Since it's too late to do that 'supposed to do' you can make up for it by doing one of those other 'supposed to do' things... :-)

Let the anonymous reference librarian be anonymous no more: Rodney A. Ross of the Center for Legislative Archives, National Records and Archives Administration.  Thank you ladies and gentlemen, please hold your applause.

Song 2: Elvis Presley - Don't Be Cruel
Song 4: The BeeGees - More Than a Woman

No wonder you haven't been posting much lately.  You've been buried in maps!

thanks for ID (4.00 / 2)
Let the record show our appreciation to Mr. Ross!

You're off to a good start on the music. Here's a hint... each one of the six is from a different decade (barring any major errors in my music library database).

I figured (4.00 / 2)
as much on the music.  Those were just the ones I knew off the top of my head.

I'll admit publicly that I couldn't remember the name of the BeeGees song until I ran through the lyrics mentally to the chorus.  Yes, I knew all the lyrics.
