Campaign disclosure stalls by those who fear sunshine

Campaign Disclosure Bill Stalled ...

Why Protect the Identity Of Out of State Wealthy Contributors?

In West Virginia there is a long standing tradition of openness and honesty that is being challenged today by wealthy outside interests under the guise of individual freedom.

Why would anyone object to disclosing their name as a contributor to any public policy issue campaign or supporting the election or defeat of any candidate if the campaign is honest and within the guidelines of our election laws?

The Governor, a majority of the legislature, the Council of Churches, Citizens Action Group and the West Virginia AFL-CIO all support passage of HB 219 and are working together to ensure that citizens have all information needed to make informed decisions on Election Day by requiring full disclosure by both in-state and out-of-state groups who would rather hide behind their special interest money.

Gary Zuckett, Executive Director, WV Citizen Action Group stated, "Voters have a right to know who is trying to influence elections in West Virginia."

Kenny Perdue, President, WV AFL-CIO agrees that, "HB 219 will raise the cloak of darkness and expose wealthy outside contributors who want to influence elections and public policy in our great state of West Virginia."

Full disclosure is important. For the sake of the kids, and all.

Stalled? (4.00 / 1)
How and why is it stalled?  And who is stalling it?  I'll drive over there right now and start kicking legislative butt.

I find it telling (4.00 / 1)
that Vic Sprouse is one of the most vocal opponents of this sunshine law. He is heavily promoting Dan Greear and currently trying to spin this as a help McGraw reelection issue which is a bit of a stretch. Considering this is a current amendment being proposed in response to a recent federal court ruling. I mean, does he expect the law just to sit dormant? If anything this will have bigger implications in the Supreme Court race the the AG given how hard CALA and the WV Chamber of Commerce stuck its nose in the primary.

Sprouse looks a little desperate here and may be playing his hand to much here. He is revealing in effect that Dan Greear, who has no more than $10,000 at the end of the primary, is banking on a multi-million attack campaign against McGaw. While many knew that and this law will not stop it (it will provide of ammunition against the Chamber of Commerce and CALA) it kind of shows the dire straits the Greear Campaign may be in financially. If they have no money of there own then they may not have the money to get the all too important name recognition out. Benjamin won his race due to the fact that he had a lot of his own money to go along with Blankenship's.

Something else I don't get (0.00 / 0)
Republicans are always running around talking about the inherent morality and correctness of the free market.  Consumers (voter) buy (give money to) the product of their choice (a candidate).  If the consumer sees value in a product they buy it and that, in turn, sets the price.  if a product is not valuable, consumers won't buy it and the market will have done it's job.  This is not an analogy I am fond of or even support, but isn't it what they're always saying will fix everything?  Just let the free market handle it.  I could go a lot further with this analogy, but I'm tired.
