Let's hope they remain complacent

Gary Abernathy, the best West Virginia Republican blogger in Ohio, isn't really sure what to make of the Campaign for Change in West Virginia.

In his post today, Abernathy points out how the Obama campaign staff in West Virginia is really made up of West Virginia Democratic Party staffers and others as if that's nothing for McCain supporters to worry about. I've said here all along how it was clear how Jay Rockefeller and Joe Manchin have basically turned over their campaign staffs to the Obama campaign. That is a really good thing for Obama. It means that unlike past presidential efforts, we have 27 staffers and hundreds of volunteers, who are West Virginians and actually know the state and have won campaigns here.

In his post, Abernathy assures his Republican readers that West Virginia is a "safe" state for McCain to win. I saw one Republican - not Abernathy - claim McCain was going to win it by 20.

Here's what Abernathy doesn't mention, and it's very telling. In his post he doesn't mention either the June 3rd Rasmussen poll that showed McCain up by just 8 points or the latest poll from this week from Blankenship Enterprises that showed McCain up by just 5 points.

I hope Abernathy and the McCain campaign continue to believe West Virginia is a safe state for them. I truly do.

I love complacency in opponents. Complacency led to Al Gore's defeat in West Virginia in 2000 and it's time for Democrats to return the favor.

Campaign for Change (4.00 / 2)
They have a great location in the heart of downtown Charleston.  However, I would remind you that the Kerry campaign had a largely -- though not entirely -- West Virginia staff in 2004.  The team included prominent staff from Senator Byrd, Senator Rockefeller and Governor Wise.  This will be a test if we are blue, red or purple.

For the complete Kerry WV 2004 team check http://www.gwu.edu/~action/200...

Kerry (4.00 / 2)
Had close to 70 people on the ground in 2004. About a dozen were from West Virginia

Look deeper (4.00 / 3)
If you want further proof that WV is competitive this year, look further into the change in the number of staff we're getting.

Obama has very little staff in places like Idaho, Utah, Oklahoma and Wyoming.  These are all places where he is actually likely to win by 20 points.  The Obama camp (which is not lead by a troop of complete idiots) obviously sees something here.  Otherwise they would have sent us the 1-3 staff and very little money.  They don't spend money where it's pointless.  Even if the point is to make the McCain campaign (which also is not lead by a troop of idiots) spend money here.

The comparison to 2000 is spot-on.  The Gore camp thought WV would go blue because it always had.  How interesting is it that the Republicans are falling into that same mindframe after only two elections.

Obama was outraising McCain 2-to-1 in WV (4.00 / 2)
And that's not even considering the contributions from Rockefeller and Manchin to the state Democratic Party.

I like how Abernathy sees using old signs as a bad thing. If it was a Republican candidate you know he'd call it a smart use of resources.

When a man embarks upon a crime, he is morally guilty of any other crime which may spring from it. Sherlock Holmes.

McCain refuses to meet with WVians? (4.00 / 2)
While McCain came to a Marshall football practice and flew into Huntington on his way to Ohio, does anyone recall him meeting with WV citizens in an open forum?

I think McCain's bus has made 3 appearances, but no open meetings with the candidate.

Meanwhile, Obama has given multiple speeches and stopped by at least 2 watering holes to talk with WV residents. He compared NCAA picks at Murads and shot some pool at another place.

Where has McCain been in WV?

In a good conversation everyone speaks.  In a great conversation some even listen.
