SoS Betty Ireland Misrepresents Facts in Radio Ad

by: PDAWV

(Bumped and updated - promoted by PDAWV)

UPDATE 2:  Sec. of State Ireland seems to have pulled this ad and replaced it with one that does not speak specifically to college students.  It now offers the three ways in which anyone can vote and does not mention college students at all.

On her way home from a meeting yesterday evening, Mrs. PDAWV heard an ad (or public service announcement) from Sec. of State Betty Ireland regarding voting options for college students.

She presented the case as college students having three options to vote in this election:

1. Go home and vote early.
2. Vote by absentee ballot.
3. Go home and vote on election day.

According to the SoS, these are the only ways in which college students in WV can vote.  Except she left out a very important fourth option:  register and vote where you go to college.

A call to the SoS office got Mrs. PDAWV to someone named Jason Williams who said that Ms. Ireland's statements were factual as they pertained to the matter at hand.  Mr. Williams also stated that though college students can legally register and vote at their college "We can't have college students running around registering to vote willy-nilly where they may not have a permanent address."

Classy.

UPDATE:  Since this was posted, WSAZ-TV ran a story on various ways college students are being treated as voters in this election cycle.  It was a very informative story about false information from several fronts.

When that story was finished, Mrs. PDAWV emailed Tim Irr to report the radio ad from the WV Secretary of State.  WSAZ responded and started looking into the story.  Since then it has been discovered that there is also a television spot by Sec. Ireland with the same (mis)information.  WSAZ contacted their media partner at WCHS (TV and radio) to get a copy of the ad.  WCHS contacted the Sec. of State's office and they refused to allow the ad to be released.

The WV Sec. of State is deliberately trying to mislead college students regarding their voting options in an effort to depress the youth vote.  Look for an online petition drive from PDWV before the end of the day regarding this issue.

26th Amendment, and voting rights (4.00 / 2)
I was able to first vote in the 1972 presidential election. This matters to me a lot. Students in Virgina at Virginia Tech and Norfolk are being disenfranchised by a lower rank partisan. Campaign for Change has to take this head on.

Voter Registration by Students Raises Cloud of Consequences

Late last month, as a voter-registration drive by supporters of Senator Barack Obama was signing up thousands of students at Virginia Tech, the local registrar of elections issued two releases incorrectly suggesting a range of dire possibilities for students who registered to vote at their college.

The releases warned that such students could no longer be claimed as dependents on their parents' tax returns, a statement the Internal Revenue Service says is incorrect, and could lose scholarships or coverage under their parents' car and health insurance.

After some inquiries from students and parents, and more pointed questions from civil rights lawyers, the state board of elections said Friday that it was "modifying and clarifying" the state guidelines on which the county registrar had based his releases.

I could have posed this in two places. The Republicans are running scared, knowing the the younger voter will be participating in greater numbers this year. Illegal voter suppression is their only club.

Should crosspost this (4.00 / 1)
We should try to get national attention on what Mrs. Ireland has done.

I only recently got an account on dKos (yes, I was a dKos troll) and can't post a diary for a week.

Can someone handle crossposting for me?

TPM (4.00 / 1)
TPM has a call out for stories like this.  I just sent the Ireland  in as a link to PDA's post.

For future reference, TPM's call for tips is here:
http://talkingpointsmemo.com/a...

As Josh says: "As you know, over the last three election cycles, TPM has put together something of a franchise being on top of the big voter suppression, vote roll purge and miscellaneous push-poll and dirty tricks watch, all while the stuff is actually happening. Right now, a month out, is when things really start popping. So as usual we're going to need your help."

I posted at DailyKos.
Didn't get much traction there. I should have put Palin in the title.

Same story in Virginia Still (4.00 / 2)
Note a recommended post in DailyKos right now on this subject. It looks like voter registration folks are getting their marching orders directly from the Republican party. Click here to read the Diary by Progressivesouth concerning the multitude of problems being faced by students in Virginia whwen attempting to register.

Welcome Breaking Blue readers... (4.00 / 2)
One small positive in this story... our next Sec. of State is 90% certain to be a Democrat (go Natalie Tennant!). Then... no more putting up with this nonsense.

Doing all I can to make sure that happens! (4.00 / 3)

Congratulations -- and great info! (4.00 / 2)
Could somebody post this as an incident, along with the video clip (if available) and any other press, on the Voter Suppression Wiki?  There are several other incidents there relating to college students and it'd be great to help flesh out the pattern ...

And the same's true for any other voter suppression incidents in WV.

Thanks much!
