Boycotting the Chamber: How do you feel about it?

As many of you know, there is a lot of buzz about a possible statewide boycott on members of the West Virginia Chamber of Commerce.

This could be a very difficult undertaking. Many of us have friends and relatives who are small business owners.  They might have joined the Chamber for no other reason than to improve their chance of success for their share of the American dream.

Many of these members may be oblivious to the  underhanded tactics of the Chamber and its push to own the government of West Virginia and trample on the  democratic rights of its citizens.

But here is the bottom line.  Every dollar we spend with these businesses goes toward paying the dues of Chamber members, and that money in turn, goes to the Chamber's attempts to undermine democracy in our state.

Its simple, in order to stop the boycott,  all a business has  to do is resign from the Chamber.

It is our right to choose the final desitnation of the money that we put into the economy. It is our obligation to see that it's used for constructive and progressive purposes.

Thanks,
Mike Sublette

You make some good points... (4.00 / 1)
Last I heard, nobody could quite ID which businesses were in on this Chamber caper... So that would be the first step, it seems to me.

Once you've got that info, I wonder if some PR kabuki theatre, addressed to local chambers and/or individual business owners, wouldn't be the first step: "Hey, we're tired of your partisan intervention in elections and intend to Take Action over it -- including a possible boycott."

Even if they don't bail on Chamber membership, the repercussions within their organization might knock the some Chambers out of politics, mebbe.

Ms. prfb assures me that the local town/regional Chambers often have no input or connection with what the state and national groups get up to. I think I'm urging the idea of co-opting people as much as possible, and saving confrontation for the hardcore idiots. (Whomever that may turn out to be.)

start with one day boycott (0.00 / 0)
I agree with prfb's sentiment. It is important not to piss off potential friends--rather to punish enemies and build momentum of support among allies.

So... how about starting with a one day high profile boycott?

It could be quite effective, esp. if done after giving those members the chance to quit the state chamber of commerce and/or sign a petition condemning the US Chamber of Commerce for tarnishing the image of our state and interfering in our electoral process.

After that, move on in a rotating basis. Pick a few companies one weekend to highlight and boycott--picket their businesses, even--and then move on to another set of firms the next weekend.

Welcome to WVaBlue. I don't know if I had the chance to meet you in Charleston on Tuesday night or not. Either way, I'm pleased to see you here online. :-)

Keep fighting the good fight!

I like your ideas Clem. (4.00 / 1)
A steady barrage of picketing might be much more effective, and would make less enemies.

Also, rather than picketing those businesses that are members (especially the mom & pops) perhaps it might be more effective to let them know just what the Chamber does. We could do this through direct contact and through publicity.

Looking like we are trying to shut down these small businesses might make us look like the bad guys rather than the Chamber.

And thanks for the welcome!

Highlighiting individual companies could be quite effective, (4.00 / 1)
but once again, I think it should be the larger companies that are obviously supporting the Chamber's antics, such as corporate law firms, etc.

And once again, I think it might be best to stay away from ANY attacks on the mom & pops.
