Important CCS Hearing in Kanawha City tonight

by: Clem Guttata

Tue Jan 20, 2009 at 06:31:10 AM EST

Rec'd via email.

***Tonight, January 20th 6:00 PM at the DEP Headquarters at 601 57th Street In Kanawha City, WV***

Sorry for the late notice. The DEP will be holding an informal hearing on the Mason County Underground Injection Control (UIC) Permit that would allow AEP to inject up to 165000 Metric Tons of Carbon Dioxide (that's around 1% of the plant's CO2 output) underground on the West Virginia - Ohio Border.

As you know, this is a bad idea for so many reasons, ranging from the uncertainty of where and how the Carbon Dioxide will migrate over the tens of thousands of years it will remain mobile to the 30% - 40% increase in energy required per plant to sequester all of its Carbon Dioxide leading to more mining and everything that goes along with it.

So come out and tell the DEP that we want clean renewable energy and not this distraction that will never make a meaningful contribution to fighting Global Climate Change. CCS is taking valuable time and money away from research and implementation of energy efficiency and renewable energy programs.

If you are concerned about the wisdom, safety, or efficacy of carbon capture and sequestration technology, here is your chance to learn more and share your concerns with the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection.

"Words That Work: It's Not What You Say, It's What People Hear"

What about replacing "global warming" with "climate change?"

What is the difference? It is climate change. Some people call it global warming; some people call it climate change. What is the difference?

The reality based community is not convinced. You can make up you own reality if you want. Watch out who you invite to join you and whether the cherries they bring have bitter almonds for pits. John Tomlinson is a local conservative columnist for The Flint Journal. You believe everything you read on teh Googley?

But where is the source? Let me guess, you've been reading bullshit propaganda created by The Center For Individual Freedom. Your kinda probably also believe Jesus was an english speaking white guy and fossils are only a few hundred years old. I'm proud(?) to live in a country where you are able to live such an ignorant existence, stevie.
Enjoy the day! We finally have a President!

simple answers to simple questions (0.00 / 0)
FALSE.

It's a "fact" made up to get global climate crisis deniers excited.

Besides, if you were actually willing to listen to the top 650 of the world's climatologists, you'd already be concerned about climate change. (See the IPCC reports for which the Nobel Peace Prize was earned.)

The world's leading climatologists are out there yelling off their roof tops that we are running out of time to do something. Do you only listen to what you want to hear?

from the article i posted above....is it true of false...and whether we really have a president remains to be seen...

It was not an "article" is was an "opionion" column, (0.00 / 0)
picked up by The Washington Times, therefore viral in your world, based on Sen. Inhofe's minority report out of EPW hearings. And the Washington Times quotes your "columnist", not looking to the fact that Sen. Inhofe was very generous with his definition of "world leading climatologist". What you are quoting is Sen. Inhofe own description of events in Poland, not what may or may not have happened. Is this like the blind men in the cave and the elephant? Elephant, yummy.

According to Sen. Inhofe's definition of "climate scientists", including economists, the retired, TV weathermen, mathematicians, amateurs and industry spokespeople, guess what stevewvu? Wait for it, wait for it, he includes me!

i did was ask if that was a true statement or not and i still dont have an answer...i dont know if it is or not and never suggest it was...geez

could you see where this may have been confusing? (0.00 / 0)
and whether we really have a president remains to be seen...

We have a president.
Chief Justice may not be able to recite Article II Section I on the first try, but we have President Barack Hussein Obama. Mr. Bush got on the helicopter.

Does every scientist agree on everything? No.
Who wanted to freeze Ted Williams head? A scientist.
Can I call them for expert testimony to get a peer reviewed grant for the latest research? Probably not.

Science has been used to justify genocide of "inferiors". It is just a tool. My grandfather's little brother used to joke that screwdrivers were only for taking out the screws.

Come on over to the only slightly hazy side. We do have more fun. I think my kids were pulling my leg when they said they found their new sister in garden under a cabbage leaf.

It is a fig newton of Sen. Inhofe's imgination (0.00 / 0)
Your "columnist" wrote down Sen. Inhofe's press release word for word, but the statement is false. Sen. Inhofe lives in a world where he is still chairman of EPW. Elections have consequences. You remember that little ditty about facts and opinions from Sen. Moynihan? Just because Sen. Inhofe called someone "a leading scientist" does not make it so. Was there a group, some of home were paid spokes models, who spoke? Yes, were there 650. No. Were there 400. No.

If there is one Don Quixote, asdf, there will be someone clinging to "the opposing science". This is not a criminal trial, yet. So ICCP works on the civil, preponderance.

The possibility that I will not be able to walk through the doorway, sober, without hitting something exists. It is a number. It therefore can be called a fact. What is done with that fact matters. If I were to stay in my room and never venture out, would my family call be crazy since they do not see the risk? I would get a label for not dealing with that number in a way that logical way.

so (0.00 / 0)
the answer is you have no idea...

NO, 650 scientists did not stand up in Poland . . . (0.00 / 0)
Sen. Inhofe's staff just published a list, they were not in Poland. I have watched the EPW hearings with Sen. Inhofe so I have information I am trying to share. The list includes people who have asked not to be on the list, or object to the characterization in the press release for Sen. Inhofe's office. So the statement is false.

At December's U.N. Global Warming conference in Poznan, Poland, 650 of the world's top climatologists stood up and said man-made global warming is a media generated myth without basis.

This list included at least 20 economists, 44 television weathermen, 84 scientists who have either accepted money from, or are otherwise connected to, the fossil fuel industry or likeminded think thanks [these kind of guys are bought, spokes models] and 70 scientists with no apparent expertise in the subject, without any specialist knowledge on this problem. They are not the world's top climatologists.

Sen. Inhofe is at worst a liar, at best a charlatan. His staff's backup documentation is a blog. If I pointed you to one with dissenting views are you going to accept that? Bill Cosby has a PhD. Is he one of the world's top climatologists?

Sen. Inhofe called any one who disagreed with him a "lunatic". Therefore he does not think these peer-reviewed people are scientists.

He is from a gas and oil state. He calls any one he agreed with a scientist. So how do I answer your question? Yes, I have a lot a information. You and I and Sen. Inhofe have a difference of whether [the elephant is a fan, a pillar or a snake].

Sen. Inhofe is the one introducing the confusion here. On purpose. There are people are upset with Sen. Inhofe distorting their actual words, let alone his name calling. Anja Eichler, Senior Scientist at the Switzerland's Paul Scherrer Institute, is very upset with how he twisted her work with blaring headlines. Meteorologist George Waldenberger sent Sen. Inhofe's staff this email in 2007 and he is still on "this list of 650" in 2008:

Marc, Matthew:

Take me off your list of 400 (Prominent) Scientists that dispute Man-Made Global warming claims. I've never made any claims that debunk the "Consensus".

You quoted a newspaper article that's main focus was scoring the accuracy of local weathermen. Hardly Scientific ... yet I'm guessing some of your other sources pale in comparison in terms of credibility.

You also didn't ask for my permission to use these statements. That's not a very respectable way of doing "research".

Did you understand my point about bouncing off of door frames sober at all? There is a possibility that I could stand up, try to walk out of my cubicle, hit the wall and fall backwards. Not very big, but the number exists. It is not zero. Remember, I am a mathematician. Are you at all comfortable with a blaring headline?

stevewvu, what your government did not want you to know (4.00 / 1)
Like the email from EPA that OMB did not open do they did not have to deal with the issue, and then the denial that the email had been sent or existed at all, Buchco delayed their own reports until last Friday, hoping no one would notice. They would have come out before, but knuckling dragging slowed them down.

Coastal Sensitivity to Sea-Level Rise: A Focus on the Mid-Atlantic Region
Thresholds of Climate Change in Ecosystems
Aerosol properties and their impacts on climate
Past Climate Variability and Change in the Arctic and at High Latitudes

One newspaper's take on the reports:

The findings, released Friday, counter suggestions from skeptics that such recent events as the opening of the Northwest Passage and collapse of ice shelves in the Canadian Arctic are predictable phenomena that can be explained as part of a natural climate cycle rather than being driven by elevated carbon emissions from human activity.

The House Science and Technology Committee gathered in formation on this. Non-scientists redacting scientific studies exposed by a whistle blower and investigated by the GAO. A delay in the technology acquisition to gather data. Who could have imagined?
