Republicans don't know how to stimulate the economy.

I've been watching these debates in the Senate for three days and I'm very disappointed by the way the Stimulus Bill is turning out.  As it stands now they have put 42% of the Bill as TAX CUTS.... and tax cuts don't stimulate a thing!

Because of the 60 vote minimum needed to pass this thing in the Senate, Democrats have let Republicans re-insert the very things that caused the economy to dive into the pits over the last eight years... TAX CUTS!

This is a STIMULUS BILL! That means we have to SPEND MONEY that will go into the economy and be re-spent two or three times. It has to be money spent to make people BUY THINGS!

btchakir :: Republicans don't know how to stimulate the economy.
If we give $100.00 to a poor family in food stamps that money will be spent and re-spent by the grocery store and equal $173.00 in economic activity.

If we give a banker a $100.00 tax cut, that money will stay in an investment account and will not be re-spent and will not generate other spending on other things which will guarantee that jobs exist to provide those things... well, you see what I mean.

SPENDING increases the economy. TAX CUTS keep the economy in chains.

President Obama told the Democratic Representatives meeting in Williamsburg that STIMULUS MEANS SPENDING. We all support him, don't we?  We elected him over a competitor whose economic policies and the economic policies of his Party had dragged us into the worst situation since the 1930s. Yet we have listened to McCain steer the Republican side of the debate to TAX CUTS, TAX CUTS, TAX CUTS.

McCain and McConnell and Graham and all the other damned fool Republicans have been using their ability to prevent a 60 vote majority as a whip. Democrats better stand up to them. If not, the economy will continue to fail, more jobs will be lost, less and less will be manufactured or sold, less and less employment of workers will be necessary... it will just continue to spiral into the toilet.

what's we're up against... (0.00 / 0)
This is how bad the current situation is (read Swampland for details)

These are actual numbers, not projections, for the current recession!

So, what do we know about how government intervention helps an economy?

The higher the number of the right, the more help to the economy. A number above 1.0 means the government gets more bang for its buck than it spends, a number less than 1.0 means it costs the government more than it generates in an annual GDP increase.

If you want to help grow the economy, the best thing is to give money to poor people already getting aid. The next best thing is infrastructure spending and after that, direct aid to state government. These are the VERY THINGS the Republicans are insisting be taken out of the stimulus bill. This makes absolutely no sense.

I'm wondering just how WV's District 2 voters fall in those income categories, because Shelley Capito certainly voted in lockstep with the rest of her Republican cohort to reject th Democratic plan.

If anyone knows where I can access WV District 2 income strata I'd put together a nice chart revealing which stimulus proposal better serves her district.

Compromising Away One Million Jobs...Or Is It Two?

The so-called "moderate compromise" in the Senate cuts $140 billion in spending from the stimulus legislation, but leaves in place between $300 billion and $350 billion in tax cuts.

This is important, because it's not just how much they cut, it's what they cut.

According to the CBO's conservative estimate, for every $140,000 increase in GDP, one job is created. The CBO also projects that stimulus spending -- not tax cuts -- has the biggest impact on GDP.

The multiplier for stimulus spending generally ranges between 1 and 2.5, meaning for every $1 spent between $1 and $2.50 in additional GDP is generated. In contrast, the multiplier for tax cuts for the wealthy is 0.5 -- or less.
[snip]
So what does that mean for the Senate "compromise"? It means it will generate between 1 million and 2.5 million fewer jobs than the original proposal.

Follow the link for another cool table of multipliers.
