Bill O'Reilly Hates You

Via the Blue Virginia Blog:

I thought Appalachia was what right wingers like to call the "REAL America." So, why does Bill O'Reilly hate Appalachia and its people - the people that Jim Webb writes about in "Born Fighting" - so much? Here is some of what O'Reilly had to say:

I submit to you that the culture in Appalachia harms the children almost beyond repair... There's really nothing we can do about it," O'Reilly told Sawyer.

She had a different view, of course. She said, "The great opportunity is the information economy... These kids are as smart as the kids in India."

"Sure," O'Reilly agreed. "But their parents are screwed up. That's the thing... Kids get married at 16 and 17. Their parents are drunks. I'm generalizing now. (Gee, ya think?) There's a lot of meth. There's a lot of irresponsibility. There's fear to go. Look, if I'm born in Appalachia, the first chance I get, I go to Miami. Because that's where the jobs are. But they stay there. And the cycle of poverty for 200 years - boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom. And I don't want to sound hopeless about it but I think it IS hopeless."

Last election, we noted that poor whites--in the form of Appalachians--are one group you can still get away with insulting in otherwise "polite company." Bill O'Reilly is picking it up right where many others left off.

Interesting how much a certain blogger on DK and Bill O both resort to stereotypes about Appalachia.

When a man embarks upon a crime, he is morally guilty of any other crime which may spring from it. Sherlock Holmes.

alot of people in west virginia who fit the stereotype bill describes

There are a lot (0.00 / 0)
of people in every state that fit that stereotype....even outside of appalachia.
I've lived in and visited a large part of this country and that type of people are everywhere.

Appalachian Talent (4.00 / 4)

Diane Sawyer from above: She had a different view, of course. She said, "The great opportunity is the information economy... These kids are as smart as the kids in India."

When you work with the creative side of our region like I do you learn very quickly that the folks in Appalachia possess a wide range of talents and abilities that are really surprising. Just look at the musical talent that comes out of our area, the art, the writing. I can show folks incredible paintings, poetry, and sculpture that is as good as anything you see coming out of the "big cities" in this country.

I have a good friend who is a retired school teacher who spent most of her working years in Mercer County who will unequivocally state that the most creative kids she worked with were those she taught when she taught in McDowell county. I can attest to that by by looking at the art at our gallery here in Bluefield contributed by artists from McDowell County.

The problem as I see it is not what O'Reilly says, but rather the fact that the kids of Appalachia are actually deprived because the budgets aren't there to hire the teachers we need, provide programs in art and music, and provide the preparatory programs that help our kids move on to higher education.  The problem is also poverty insuring parents have to work multiple jobs if they are available thus not spending time raising their kids.  The fact that coal companies bring nothing back to the communities that are being destroyed by slurry ponds and mountaintop removal.

It is sad to note that the newest opportunity for employment in southern West Virginia is a Federal Prison.  I just hope that something good comes out of it with regard to real employment and better schools.

I didn't grow up in southern West Virginia and have only been here for 19 years, but I love the people, the culture, and the beauty I have enjoyed since moving here.  O'Reilly could never appreciate the really great side of our state.

Just curious: What are the West Virginia bona fides of anyone (0.00 / 0)
