That caught my eye...

- Rate Hike For Power Companies Opposed - There's a really, really, really big hike on the table for later so meanwhile the power company is asking for a merely really big hike in the interim.

The state Public Service Commission plans to make a decision before July 1 on a rate increase request from two subsidiaries of American Electric Power. Appalachian Power and Wheeling Power are seeking an 18.5 percent interim increase.

- Bayer Adds Emergency Director at West Virginia Chemical Plant - It's a start. Now, following their own safety regulations would be a good next step.

Bayer said that Doug Jones comes to the Institute plant from the company's plant in New Martinsville.

(Hey, if anyone is listening out there, it might be worth checking to see if Doug Jones' old safety-related position at the New Martinsville plant is still filled... just sayin').

- Swine Flu Leads West Virginia Officials to Take Precautions - No cases here yet, but the way things are going it may well only be a matter of time.

Preventing the swine flu is as simple as following the precautions of the normal flu. You should wash your hands thoroughly, cover your mouth when you cough and, if you fell sick, you should just stay at home.

This is a good time to remind our politicians--it would be a really good idea for the public health of our country to mandate paid sick days for all employees. Right now someone with flu symptoms is heading to work because they can't afford an unpaid day at home.

- We don't have that outbreak, but we do have this one: W.Va., Pennsylvania Among States With New Salmonella Outbreak

Raw alfalfa sprouts have been linked to a salmonella outbreak in at least six states, including West Virginia and Pennsylvania.

The Food and Drug Administration and Centers for Disease Control have advised consumers to avoid the sprouts until further notice.

- Remember the 1927 explosion at the Federal Number 3 mine in Monongalia County? Ground broken for W.Va. Everettville mine disaster monument

WVU and Deep Brain Stimulation for Obesity Treatment (0.00 / 0)
So the spouse was channel surfing and stopped on Oprah. Yeah, I know Oprah.

Originally used to treat Parkinson, a second patient underwent the procedure. Dr. Donald Whiting performed the surgery back in February.

He is currently engaged in a clinical trial at WVU exploring the use of DBS for treating morbid obesity.

The Blancheete Rockefeller Center for Neuroscience at WVU is studying Alzheimer. A Columbia University study found diabetes increases the risk of getting Alzheimer's Disease.

Didn't we move up to the second fattest state?

Here's news in development (4.00 / 1)
You can watch a webcast from here (http://www.state.wv.us/wvsca/Webcast.htm) of today's proceedings - Thom Hildebrand's appeal of the PSC's approval of the Trans-Alleghany Interstate Line (TrAIL).

Here's the description from the motion docket:

Intervenor below appeals the Public Service Commission's order granting Respondent Trans-Allegheny's application for a certificate of public convenience and necessity to construct segments of a multi-state electric transmission line and related facilities through portions of Monongalia, Preston, Tucker, Grant, Hampshire, and Hardy Counties and denying motion for reconsideration of that order and request for a continuing prudence review.

It was supposed to start at 10 a.m., but I took a peek and it's a different case right now.

what is up with sprout seeds being contaminated? (0.00 / 0)
That clean upsets me.  Seeds?   One would think they could keep seeds from such contamination.  ............ at least

Agribusiness (0.00 / 0)
What they do to scarify the seed for easier sprouting increases the possibility of contamination. So even if you sprout your own at home, unless you wash the seeds with weak bleach water, or know that growers track record, you still may be taking a chance.

Bush was running USDA with the same approach to bidnez, as Molly Ivins would say, non-bindinging recommendations, self-regulation.

The last spinach contamination was due to irrigation and field cleaning water having runoff form the dairy operation, with unnecessary antibiotic use, in their fields. Like the oldest kid says, nothing else matters if there is no clean water.

Shelley NO Capito: Any one want to ask her about her vote on HR 1913? (0.00 / 0)
She was not among the few Republicans who voted AYE. She votes against the Mathew Shepherd bill: Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act

After all Rep. Foxx (R-NC-01) called it a hoax that his murder was a hate crime, not just a robbery gone bad.
