Ogden newspaper publishes assassinate Obama ad

Yes, you read it correctly. Currently, this story is the most recommended diary on dailykos.

Today, the Times-Observer of Warren, PA published a classified ad which read:

May Obama follow in the footsteps of Lincoln, Garfield, McKinley and Kennedy!

Now what do Presidents Lincoln, Garfield, McKinley, and Kennedy have in common? Ah yes; they were all assassinated. You can see the ad for yourself in this PDF version of the applicable page.

Who owns the Warren Times-Observer? None other than Wheeling's own Ogden Nutting and his company Ogden Newspapers Inc. (ONI)

WV26003 :: Ogden newspaper publishes assassinate Obama ad
The Keystone Progress organization has been following this story today before it was published on DailyKos.

According to Keystone Progress, the editor has apologized for the publication and alerted local authorities.

'It is unfortunate that it made it to press,' said Elchert.  'The person who took the ad didn't recognize the significance of the names.  We cancelled the ad and turned the information over to the authorities.'

The newspaper has yet to do an online version of a retraction, and Ogden Nutting has not released a statement on the matter. I'm half tempted to contact Keith Olbermann or Rachel Maddow with this story. Maybe they can get a statement out of old Ogden. I have his home phone number if anyone wants it.

Isn't it ironic that an Ogden newspaper was caught in such a fiasco?

But you know if that Personal Ad (0.00 / 0)
was of another type where they disagreed, or deemed it indecent by their standards, it would have been rejected.

It's not like there are monuments on the Mall to all those ex-Presidents or something. How did the person in the ad department not question how the names were related?

Politico has a short piece on the apology, which has a link to a longer Editor and Publisher story. It states the paper ran an "apologize for the oversight" note today.

Elchert said he had not been contacted by federal authorities, but added, "my understanding is there will be an agent in town, but I don't know if it is FBI or Secret Service."

You can wait for the DOJ are Treasury Dept. interpretation. Maybe your school needed more maps.

US Code: Title 18, Section 871:

Or don't you believe in the rule of law, Steve?

Until you answer the questions posed to you, you really have no standing to ask anyone else anything on any subject.

it was a British film but it won a Canadian award (0.00 / 0)
Since 1840, the previous nine presidents elected in a year divisible by 20 has either been killed, died in office of natural causes or, like Reagan, been shot. Bush was next in line. Seems like a plausible fictional device. The film is about the investigation afterwards. See it?

The Manchurian Candidate is fiction. And The Assassination of Richard Nixon, Suddenly, In the Line of Fire, Air Force One, The Sentinel, etc., etc., etc. Fiction. How many Presidents has 24 killed?

Personal ads are for connecting with people of like mind: long walks on the beach, loves kittens, seeing That One dead. Ever wonder why the Secret Service extended protection early? Ever wonder why that Bush DHS official reported on right-wing extremists? Sort of like "May the spouse of ******** swim with Mrs. Scott Peterson, and the 3rd & 4th Mrs. Drew Peterson" yuck function times the POTUS factor. Not poetry, not fiction, sort of ball-crushing-take-your-breath-away solicitation for assassination, not a date. Got it?

see it...only reason i mentioned it was that it was the only instance that came to mind at the time involving that type stuff with bush...and i wanted to see the response on here...make no mistake about it, i do not find what was put in that personal ad funny...somebody put the u.s. statute on here... i dont know if placing that ad breaks that law but again i dont like it...no secret i disagree with alot of the stuff on wv blue but i think we can all agree that whether you voted for bush or obama or reagan or clinton or whomever he (hopefully she some day) is still the president and comments like those in the ad are tasteless....

"Tasteless"? Never underestimate stevewvu's ability to come up with an inappropriate weaselword. (4.00 / 1)
CMON DUDE! A paid advertisement publicly dog whistling for a US president's assassination is "tasteless"?

Was it meant to be funny or was it part and parcel to the rightwing's ongoing dogwhistle campaign to incite violence?

After weasel wording the ad as "unfunny" (would it have been better if it were hilarious?) stevewvu then hunts down some obscure Canadian anti-Bush diatribe which none of us has ever seen and waves it around as if we'd posted it on WV Blue and had all commented on it.

Calling stevewvu a sociopath would be an insult to sociopaths. Most of I've faced at least have had the intellectual honesty to "man up" when confronted.

Yeesh.
