The Other Don Surber

My boss plays golf with several dentists so we heard about this before the victim was identified in the local papers. The dentist for my family and most of my coworkers is Brian Palank, Kathy Sharp's employer. The Roll family takes #5 daughter on vacation to the Outer Banks with them each year. Brian just put a cap on for me last month, with Kathy assisting. The man who took her hostage, and has been arraigned on murder charges, just tried what I could call suicide by cop.

My own mother was shot in the face by my step-father on her 59th birthday. The intervention of Anne Arundel Mall shoppers put an end to the pistol whipping and saved her life. He was sentenced to fifteen years in the Maryland prison system and released after eight. Everyday three women in the United states die at the hands of their partner.

At the age of 68 the mother of our pastoral assistant survived a rape and beating in her home in Philadelphia. I found strength from my friendship with Sister that words cannot express, but it took us years to talk about the common event in our lives that had been the invisible part of our bond. Everyday six hundred women in the United states are sexually assaulted.

We like to lecture other countries about the position of women in their society. Since Kathy Sharp graduated from high school we have seen the wives and female children of three Presidents treated as targets in the war of politics. Violence against women was a tactic of war used in the Balkans, Congo, Rwanda, and Darfur.

Donald Berkley Surber stands accused of destroying part of my community.

Soon we will all realize that the Invisible Pink Unicorn is about love, and she wants us to make heaven right here on earth.

I think of that Jeebus fellow as a feminist. Pray for the suffering, bleeding human family.

tragic loss (4.00 / 1)
My condolences go out to the Sharp family and all those suffering from this tragic loss.

Roll and Sharp had signed up as volunteers for the Mission of Mercy free dental clinic to be held at Hedgesville High School next weekend. They have always worked well together their personalities "clicked," Roll said. Returning to work will be difficult.

"I just can't imagine walking through those doors, and her not being there," Roll said. "Dr. Palank's office is never going to be the same without her. I know life goes on, but I don't know how."

What are those stages of grief? (4.00 / 1)

With DUI the three-strikes-and-its-a-felony apply to convictions in all the surrounding states, period.

Donald Surber has criminal history

Surber, 37, was taken into custody at 2:02 p.m. Monday at the end of a hostage situation that began at 11:46 a.m. Sunday.
He threatened to kill Sharp, if police didn't meet his demand.
About noon Monday, police said they didn't have any reason to believe Sharp was injured.

West Virginia Coalition Against Domestic Violence

Only recently in West Virginia (1992) was domestic violence identified as a crime that will no longer be tolerated or excused.
Men are responsible for 95% of the battering that occurs in the United States.
Anger management theory suggests provocation, fails to account for premeditation, diffuses responsibility, implies that there is a quick fix, misrepresents the depth of the problem in the community and fully misses the link to the larger issue of sexism and patriarchy.
A hostage-taker is at high risk of inflicting homicide.
Between 75% and 90% of all hostages taken in the US are related to domestic violence situations.

I sat at the back at the funeral today but my eyes still leaked. Some states make the person asking for the restraining order responsible for serving it. There are men's groups that decry a RO as drastic, part of a multi-billion dollar business born of feminist politics that infringe on their Second Amendment rights. [I will not link to them] Heard the phrase identity politics lately?

Maybe Kathy let the TRO expire at the end of April since he was sentenced on another matter in May. Who knew six weeks later he would be back in Berkeley County. I am now at the pissed off stage.

If you drive by Hedgesville High School this weekend (4.00 / 1)
and see the crowds for the dental clinic, find some time to be quiet in your life. That is where the Society of Friends say the Creator exists.

The family had an open casket funeral. I hope this is the Emmit Till moment for domestic violence in this state.
