Obama's OSMRE asks Manchin's DEP to do its job

This is an encouraging sign.

Last week W.Va. Department of Environmental Protection (sic) Secretary Randy Huffman was on Capitol Hill boasting about his department's surface water runoff regulation approach.

This week the Obama administration U.S. Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement sent him back with homework. They want the W.Va. DEP to do a better job.

Who knows, with enough Federal pressure we may go from having a DEP with regulations that might help with surface water run-off issues to one that actually follows through and enforces surface water run-off regulations.

At a recent U.S. senate hearing the only witness to defend mountaintop removal was Randy Huffman, secretary of the WV Department of Environmental Protection! (4.00 / 3)
All other expert witnesses called mountaintop removal damage to our environment 'Irreversible'. If that doesn't reveal that Manchin's appointee who is supposed to protect my environment is in the pocket of strip mine overlords, I don't know what does.

"West Virginia and the nation need jobs and coal," Huffman told senators. "Coal production is the leading revenue generator for West Virginia, and many in the state are concerned about losing the opportunities for future economic development associated with mountaintop mining."

Huffman sounds more like our secretary of commerce than head protector of our environment.

Why does Huffman still have a job with DEP after that performance?
