West Virginia after the mountains (contest)

by: Clem Guttata

Fri Jul 03, 2009 at 08:21:09 AM EDT

Via the indispensable Coal Tattoo, here's a contest announcement that will be of great interest to West Virginia Blue readers:

Since West Virginia is allowing its mountains to be destroyed, it is no longer possible for us to claim the nickname "The Mountain State." Nor is it possible to root for athletic teams called the "West Virginia Mountaineers."  Therefore a contest is announced to select new nicknames for our state and our athletic teams.

A winning nickname will be selected in each of the following categories:

1. STATE NICKNAME: West Virginia, the ___________ State.

2. ATHLETIC TEAMS:  The West Virginia ___________.  (Or "Let's go, ___.")

The winner in each category will receive $100.00

Only submissions that include a West Virginia address will be accepted.  Submissions should include name and address/phone number so if you win, prizes can be awarded.  Your name and winning entry will be publicized. (Addresses will not be made public.)

Contest judges will be writers Denise Giardina, Arla Ralston, and the Rev. Jim Lewis.

Please send submissions to Nickname Contest, P.O. Box 20454, Charleston, WV, 25362

The deadline for submissions is July 20, 2009, and the winning entries will be announced later in the month.

By way of background, Denise Giardina is a noted W.Va. author and Jim Lewis is a prominent West Virginia anti-war and economic justice activist.

Update: hat tip to MC. Notice anything missing from this Herald-Dispatch AP article covering the same press release?

Where? (2.00 / 2)
I guess anyone who is interested in submitting should know where the environmentalists are.

Mountain State (0.00 / 1)
Good grief.
And some environmentalists wonder why people don't take them seriously....

Since several bounties have been offered by right wingnuts to figure out who "One Citizen" might be, (2.50 / 2)
I'd just as soon decline the cash and offer my ideas for free, thank you just the same. Especially since accepting the cash prize would put my family at risk due to their publicizing my name.

What I'm getting at is that while I was helping flood victims in southern WV just last month, the minister of a local church cautioned me that locals who have spoken out publicly against mountaintop removal in the past have woken up in the wee morning hours to what he called was a "plywood fire drill". What that means is that a team of "pro" mountaintop removal activists "visited" their victim's home with enough plywood and nail guns to completely board up the first floor of their house in a matter of seconds, and set it on fire.

He wasn't kidding.

So although I'm not about to clam up about my opposition to mountain top removal, I'm also not real excited about revealing where my family lives, either.

BTW I have a suggestion for a new WV motto.

Instead of "Mountaineers are always free", I think "Hillbillies have always been screwed" might be appropriate, considering how coal operators treat West Virginians.

An appropriate sports team name might be the "Coalpatch Saudis", since most West Virginians are treated as if they live in a third world country by an elite few who'd literally do anything to get their hands on our coal to enrich their own coffers. And if you think about it, most of the WVU Mountaineers' real stars (and their coaches) are always "drafted" onto the teams by usurping funds which otherwise could have helped to educate some of the most deprived kids from the poorest counties of the entire U.S. Who happen to live right here in one of the riches coal patches in the world.

Oh, and by the way, The Mountain Party was born as a direct result of the "Denise Giardina for Governor" campaign in the year 2000 general election, when she lost to Bob Wise. So I'm really not too surprised that West Virginia Blue somehow forgot to mention the "radical" source of the contest ran against a Democrat who not only

BTW anyone from WV who looks closely at Giardina's platform in retrospect might be surprised to find that her biggest problem was fund raising and spreading the word. Because it certainly wasn't her politicals or her integrity.

No, it was missing from the Herald-Dispatch (0.00 / 0)

Clem was asking what was missing from the newspaper. Any where to send the entries and the fact that the Rev. and Denise were behind this. It is in the diary! I'll wait, go get glasses. My bad, oh so bad, snark blinded you. Sorry.

It is completely obvious what was missing, and from where... (0.00 / 0)
What I expected to hear from my good friend CA Berkely were some creative and focused alternatives to my suggestions for a new state motto and sports team. Instead, she scolds me for a fair critique of WVABLUE for not coming completely clean on who Denise Giardina really is.

The Mountain Party was born as a direct result of the "Denise Giardina for Governor" campaign in the year 2000 general election. The Mountain party hasn't posed any real threaten to the Democratic party as yet, but as Governor Manchin winds down his second term, West Virginians may be compelled to distrust the Democratic party to the point where they'd just as soon vote for a ninja turtle rather than chance electing a DINO to run the country.

As an author, Ms. Giardina has incorporated a diversity of portraits, not only of coal miners, but also of coal operators, politicians, and VISTA workers into her novels, and has chronicled a continual lack of concern for human life by coal mine operators. Her novels include such important and diverse issues spanning from Black Lung to catastrophic floods in WV. Her novels have also captured the historical aspects of religion and racism in WV.

Mountain Party born through Charlotte write-in Campaign (0.00 / 0)
I could be all wrong on this but I remember the MP being formed not from DG but from CP's ill-fated write-in campaign.  Anybody out there remember different?  It seems that the party was formed by accident since all the signatures collected via petition qualified for a third party.  I don't think the intent was to form a third party but more of an after-thought.

You assume too much. I wasn't think at all one way or another about Denise Giardina's political background. If you want to say something about it, say it. There's no need to project some motive on to me that doesn't exist.

Really, I could hardly care less about what happened back in 2000. I wasn't as politically engaged back then as I am now. I probably should care more, but I really don't give a rat's a$$ about reliving past political battles. My electoral eye is on 2010 and 2012. I think way too much time is spent rehashing old history in this state and not enough time spent planning for the future.

FWIW, I included a link to her Wikipedia entry. I wasn't trying to hide a thing. If you think there's insufficient information in Wikipedia about her role in forming the Mountain Party, you would do us all a great service by editing that entry. (I mean this sincerely... if people with a long memory like you don't put things in Wikipedia, I fear the details will be lost forever.)
