In an article today in the Bluefield Daily Telegraph a summit planned for July 28th at a local Country Club with the express purpose of rallying everybody they can against initiatives that are designed to reduce carbon emissions and attempt to prove that global warming science is questionable...

By BILL ARCHER
Bluefield Daily Telegraph
BLUEFIELD — The southern West Virginia and southwestern Virginia business community will receive a briefing on what Bill Raney, president of the West Virginia Coal Association called, “the watershed of the entire Obama administration,” when the Princeton/Mercer County and the Greater Bluefield chambers of commerce as well as the Pocahontas Coal Association host the inaugural Coal Summit on July 28, at Fincastle Country Club.

“The administration is penalizing the public based on science that no one has a consensus on,” Raney said. “There are still differences of opinion on the science of climate change, but Congress is trying to force a consensus on the public because Al Gore thinks you should a consensus.”

The entire article can be read by clicking here. Emphasis mine.

Folks that live in the West Virginia and Southwestern Virginia coal fields deserve better than this.  How about a summit where the ignorance and outright falsifications of facts being generated by big coal money can be countered by folks that really understand the environment and the damage being done to our citizens in the cities and hollows they live in?

Those that are denying reality are only interested in continuing to line their pockets while they can. I wonder how welcome those that are opposed to mountaintop removal and understand the damage being done to our mountains and the world's environment would be at this meeting?

scientific consensus (4.00 / 1)
Bill Raney needs to update his talking points. The scientific consensus on climate change is that it is happening, it is due to green house gases, and that people are contributing to it.

To promote any other view here in 2009 is as scientifically ignorant as holding a conference to discuss how flat the earth is or how many turtles are holding it up.

The only lack of consensus is actually how little time we have to do something about global climate change--and how dire the consequences will be.

The Thumb in the Eye (0.00 / 0)
The quote that stung me was the following:

"We all thought it might work if the chambers brought a wide array of people to the meeting," Raney said.

I guess people who disagree (i.e. scientists) are not people.  The only other conclusion is that Mr. Raney is blowing smoke.

Raney calls WV "the nations boiler room" (4.00 / 1)
I heard Raney once refer to our state as the "nations boiler room" in a committee hearing room during interims this year and thought his statement rather outlandish and presumptuous.  His characterization says it all for me of his reasons for promoting dirty stinky toxic coal all these years, he actually believes it and thinks it's a good thing.  The problem with his statement is that in a true boiler room the workers don't have to breath the exhaust, it goes up the stack.  Here in WV the residents get to breath the discharge air first hand during all the toxic processes of coal extraction, cleaning, and burning.

not something to brag about (0.00 / 0)
There's a lot of ways that statement could be taken.

I wonder if he realized the movie Boiler Room was about the kind of boiler room you wouldn't readily admit to running.

Yet, this is an apt description for King Coal, perhaps?

Some traits of a boiler room include presenting only good news about the stock to be sold, and discouraging outside research by customers or brokers working there.
