Liquid Coal: Senate Action Day

by: Clem Guttata

Mon Jun 11, 2007 at 13:57:53 PM EDT

Depending on how long the Alberto Gonzales no-confidence takes today, the Senate may take up the Energy Bill as early as this evening. That means there's no time to waste to make our voices heard on the Liquid Coal legislation.

The massive subsidies for coal were defeated in committee. Unfortunately, they could easily get snuck back in again as an amendment before the final vote.

Call your Senator today! Tell them to vote against Liquid Coal if it comes up again as an amendment. For those of us in West Virginia, call Sen. Byrd and Sen. Rockefeller. Here are their numbers:

Sen. Jay Rockefeller - 202-224-6472
Sen. Robert Byrd - 202-224-3954

If you haven't done so already, sign this petition from MoveOn. Here's a new petition from True Majority to sign, too.

The Coal to Liquid Fuel bill is a bad piece of legislation. It will increase, not decrease carbon emissions. It will increase, not decrease destruction Mountain Top Removal coal mining. It will increase, not decrease the transfer of wealth to corporate energy owners. It is bad energy policy, bad social policy, and bad environmental policy.

This is a critical time for action. Your voice can make a difference.

Weird allies (4.00 / 1)

This is weird. Bow Tie Boy over at the State Journal is siding with Byrd, etc., for C-to-L while he criticizes conservative hacks at The National Review for opposing it, which puts you on the same side as National Review and in opposition to Byrd and others whom you usually support.

Politics makes strange bedfellows indeed -- not that I want a mental image of Chris Stirewalt in bed with anyone.

When a man embarks upon a crime, he is morally guilty of any other crime which may spring from it. Sherlock Holmes.

Stirewalt shows duplicity in last graph (0.00 / 0)
It’s a proven, reliable technology that doesn’t need more testing or subsidy. It just needs a stable marketplace and the capital will flow.

Wow. Let's count the lies.

#1) Putting aside the wisdom of doubling-down on coal, the amount of water required, and other negative externalities... turning coal into liquid fuel might be a proven, reliable technology as long as you ignore global climate change. There's absolutely nothing proven about the ability to perform large-scale carbon sequestration.

#2) No subsidy necessary? What is a subsidy? "In economics, a subsidy is a kind of financial government assistance, such as a grant, tax break, or trade barrier, in order to encourage the production or purchase of a good." His entire piece is an argument in favor of subsidies. Government guarantees to create a stable marketplace is a subsidy.
