Given the weakness of the West Virginia Republican Party, it's fairly common in this state for rightwing politicians to run under the Democratic party ballot line in order to get elected.
West Virginia is full of such "Democrats," who are so far to the right and beholden to industry and union-busting CEOs, that in any other state, they'd be called for what they are - rightwing Republicans.

What's even worse is when these types get into a position of leadership.
Today's shoutfest on mountaintop removal permits brought us one of the dumbest statements I've heard in quite some time -from someone who supposedly leads West Virginia Democrats.
Your Senate Democratic majority leader, folks:
"The lord didn't create very many things without a purpose, but mosquitoes and the EPA come close I think," Chafin said to huge applause.
