Capito votes to cut border security funds

In all fairness to Rep. Shelley Moore Capito, I haven't seen a statement from her yet defending this vote, but it's quite shocking that she did this. Perhaps she's hoping people won't find out about her vote on this and with an often compliant West Virginia media perhaps she's right. If she sends us  a statement explaining her vote, I'll put it up to give her a chance to explain it even if she is talking out of both sides of her mouth as she often does.

From a press release:

Representative Shelley Capito Votes to Slash Border Security Funding

Representative Shelley Capito voted to slash more than $500 million for border security – resulting in more than 170 fewer border agents.

"Representative Capito talks tough on border security, but her vote to cut more than 170 border agents tells the real story," said Jennifer Crider, Communications Director at the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. "Representative Capito's irresponsible decision to slash 171 urgently needed border agents and resources puts Americans at risk with porous borders that make it easier for terrorists to enter our country."

Background:

* The Homeland Security Appropriations bill increases border security – sending at least 3,000 new border patrol agents to secure our nation.

* Representative Capito voted to cut 5.7% across the board cut for border and customs enforcement resulting in a cut of more than $500 million for border security – including resulting in 171 fewer border agents being added. This cut would bring the funding for border security $450 million below the President's request. [ H.R. 2638, vote# 489, 06/15/07]

* The Homeland Security bill also includes strong accountability measures to ensure that taxpayer dollars are being well spent.

I wonder how her friends on the conservative blogs  and news columnists are going to "spin" this?

Here's a link to the vote details. Capito voted for the amendment that would cut border security enforcement.

I don't get it. That's a huge about-face from everything she's been saying about enforcing immigration laws.

BTW: Both Rahall and Mollohan voted to keep the funding intact.
