National Mining Association Alerts its Advocacy Campaign Team on CTL

by: Beth Wellington

Fri Jun 15, 2007 at 18:49:22 PM EDT

Just so y'all know what we're up against, Brian Kelley, Advocacy Campaign Team Director of the  National Mining Association just wrote me yesterday to say it needed my voice.  I should "ACT now and urge your Senators Warner and Webb to support coal-to-liquid fuels."  (I live in Virginia)

You, too, can subscribe to the ACT mailing list, if you send your request to Kelley (bkelley@nma.org).

"The Senate this week is debating a comprehensive energy bill and will soon consider an amendment designed to jumpstart the domestic production of ultra-clean coal-to-liquid (CTL) transportation fuels.

"Thank you for your support,

"PS - Remember to take action today!  Doing your part NOW means more security, more jobs and cleaner burning domestic fuel for our country."

Today there was another letter from Mr. Kelley in my email box.

Beth Wellington :: National Mining Association Alerts its Advocacy Campaign Team on CTL
"The amendment contains vital financial provisions necessary to accelerate the construction of CTL plants and will grant the Department of Defense the ability to enter into long-term, guaranteed fixed price contracts that will discourage oil exporting countries from manipulating oil prices solely to block U.S. development of CTL fuels.

"Senators Warner and Webb will play a key role in determining the fate of this CTL amendment and the ability to break our nation’s growing dependence on oil imported from unstable and unfriendly nations.

"ACT now and tell Senator Warner and Senator Webb that America’s future prosperity and energy security hinge on Congress taking bold action to strengthen American energy independence.

"We need your voice again!

"ACT now and contact your Senators and urge them to support a coal-to-liquid (CTL) fuel amendment backed by the National Mining Association and its allies in the Coal-to-Liquids Coalition.

"Click here to send your Senator a letter requesting they support the
CTLC Endorsed Amendment!

"The Senate will likely soon vote on competing CTL amendments and your support is needed to ensure the Senate approves provisions endorsed by the Coal-to-Liquids Coalition (CTLC). The CTLC supports Senate approval of provisions that do not impose environmental standards on CTL fuels that are far more stringent than standards applied to imported oil.

"ACT now and telephone your senators and send the attached letter and ask them to support a CTLC endorsed amendment. America’s future prosperity and energy security hinge on Congress taking bold action to support CTL fuels and strengthen American energy independence.

"PS - Please take this opportunity to tell your Senator to endorse the CTLC Endorsed Amendment in the Senate Energy Package. By supporting the CTLC Endorsed Amendment, you can help break America’s dependency on foreign oil."

No, I didn't send the letter requested.  Yes, I am drafting one of my own, more along the lines of that requested by the Relgious Action Center of Reform Judaisim.

"Please write to your Senators and ask them to strengthen the environmentally-friendly aspects of the Renewable Fuels, Consumer Protection and Energy Efficiency Act of 2007 (S. 1419) and avoid environmentally harmful amendments like domestic drilling, nuclear power, and coal to liquid technologies.  The Capitol Switchboard can be reached at 202.224.3121. "
