byrdthanks

It is importannt for people of this state to remember that on many important issues - from the rush to the Iraq war to the imperial presidency of George W. Bush to the need for honest discussion on mountaintop removal and the future of coal - Senator Robert C. Byrd has been a thoughtful and foresighted leader.

Senator Byrd is not a senator resting on his laurels, but one still looking ahead to what is best for our state and for our nation.

So when I see the braying Bray Cary and the coal barons' favorite sycophant Roman Stauffer criticize Senator Byrd, West Virginia Democrats should remember how right Senator Byrd has been on other important, major issues when he flew against the prevailing winds of the state.

The people of the nation and the state would have been much better off if they had listened to Senator Byrd's words in 2003 about the rush to war just as they should pay heed to his words today of the need for honest brokers when it comes to the future of coal.

Senator Byrd has made many foes in this state with his stance. Not that a giant like "Big Daddy" needs it, but I have Senator Byrd's back.

I care what Sen. Byrd says. (4.00 / 6)
Very well said. And, thank you for saying it.

the only downside (4.00 / 1)
The only downside of that picture is King Joe's presence.

What is Ms.Capito going to say? (4.00 / 2)
I was subjected to this WKRP first thing, another article about Alan, in The Journal

Senate health care bill lacks perks for W.Va.
By Joselyn King, Ogden Publishing Co.

WHEELING - Senate leaders seeking to pass health care reform apparently didn't have to buy the support of U.S. Sens. Robert C. Byrd and Jay Rockefeller.

What a lead, dudette,

The Intelligencer in Wheeling on Tuesday asked Byrd and Rockefeller whether the proposed legislation contained additional Medicaid funds for West Virginians, money to assist laid off coal miners or dollars to improve health care in the state.

133% of poverty having the guaranteed benefit coverage. Well, are we usually at the top for incomes? Rockefeller pushed for that to be 150%, which would help the working poor in any state.

Medicaid expansion dollars if the state will pass laws that implement the ADA Olmsted decision? Ned some help because you are disabled? Anyone in West Virginia have a great pull to stay in their own home? Read the bill.

Medicaid expansion for any state with a natural disaster? It was just g-d that causes mudslides and floods where the soil of the mountain is no longer anchored. But that has never happened here. Read the bill.

In West Virginia insurance companies spend about 72% to 78% of premiums collected on actual health care. The bill raises that requirement for both small and large groups up about 7% here. Special for just West Virginia? No. Some states have a much worst record of actual care spending than us. Sorry, Ogden repoprter.

I remember a few biting comments by Rockefeller during Finance markup about "his governor", and not trusting him if you gave him too much discretion and a lump of money. So I suspect things that apply across the board to ALL states are what Rockefeller worked on for children and the working poor. But that would be real reporting, not gotcha journalism, wouldn't it?

No pre-existing condition exclusion for children, right away, no three year delay. Do you think that might apply to children here with asthma and other problems? Yes, not specifically for West By God Virgina, but did you want all the other children suffering for disease caused by poverty, poor nutrition and environmental influences in other state to be left out of benefits for bragging rights? Merry Christmas, Scrooge.

And that Vermont vote the article suggested was bought for  Community health centers? The one here just expanded its facilities, and I bet it was due to need. Hey, special Odgen Reporter. Come back over here next summer when we have another one of the Mission of Mercy free dental clinches. Interview the people who camp over night to be seen. Ask them if they think an expansion of community health centers will help them. Seasons greetings.

Can you count the ways that reporter did not now the bill? Why are we in the Eastern Panhandle constantly subjected to articles and editorials about Alan? Is Shelley Moore Capito such a sacred cow that she has become the one who shall not be questioned?

Can you make Cheetos out of goat cheese and Czech rye bread?

I think Joselyn's writings were edited (4.00 / 2)
Because there was much more commentary than journalism in that story. It was well below her standards.

These two statements particularly bothered me:

In desperate need to achieve 60 votes in the Senate on health care reform, leadership rewarded the holdouts through a series of amendments unveiled Saturday.

and

Neither Byrd nor Rockefeller directly answered The Intelligencer's questions.

That's commentary. But, it's not surprising in Mike Myer's "news"paper.

Great dissection job! (4.00 / 2)
Especially for those of us laboring under Shelley's indifference and Myers' bias.

Thanks for sharing.
