W.Va. Secretary of State Office Press Release

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
January 8, 2010
Candidate Filing Period Begins Monday

Charleston, W.Va. - Candidates seeking office in 2010 can begin filing their paperwork with the Secretary of State's Office or their county clerk on Monday.

The filing period runs from January 11 to midnight on January 30. The Secretary of State's Office will be open until the deadline on the last day to assist any last second filers. Candidates should check with their county clerk's office to find out their hours for that day.

New this year is the requirement for all candidates in House of Delegates and State Senate races to register with the Secretary of State's Office. Previously, only candidates whose districts covered more than one county had to file with the Secretary of State.

The Secretary of State's Office is prepared to assist candidates who wish to file their paperwork Monday morning at the State Capitol. The Elections Division staff will be available to answer any questions candidates may have.

Candidates can also fill out a certificate of announcement at their county clerk's office or download it and print it from the Secretary of State's website. Those must be postmarked by midnight on January 30.

More information about important dates for candidates to remember is available on the Secretary of State's website at http://www.wvsos.com. Candidates can find out when their campaign finance reports are due, when county clerks will do a random drawing for ballot position, and the deadline for a candidate to have their name removed from the ballot if they decide not to run.

"We have turned our conference room into a place completely dedicated to helping candidates file their paperwork," Secretary of State Natalie E. Tennant said. "Our Elections Division will be there to answer questions and help candidates make sure they've dotted their I's and crossed their T's. We want to make this process as easy as possible, so the candidates can focus on the issues facing the citizens of West Virginia."

Starting Monday, voters can see a complete list of registered candidates on the Secretary of State's webpage by clicking on the banner at the top of the page. The list of candidates will be updated in real time.

I noticed that Richie Robb is going to run against coalocrat Eric Wells. (0.00 / 0)
With his name recognition and level of popularity here in Kanawha county, Robb stands a good chance of sending Wells back to being a weather gal or whatever he used to do on the boobtube.

BTW does anyone know how Wells kept from being called back into military service?  Because I personally asked him to publicly call for removing the troops from Iraq back in 2003 when he ran against Shelley Capito, and he flatly refused.  In contrast, Robb was always on the right side of that issue.

Since that time, his voting record in the Senate and the statements he's made regarding everything from unions to women's issues indicate that he's so far from being progressive that he makes former Republican Richie Robb look like Saul Alinsky.

I plan on volunteering to actively help Robb beat Wells, and invite others to do the same.

Erik, with a k (0.00 / 0)
I have to spell both of my real names so I am sensitive to that.

You should know begin called up depends on your MOS -- Public Affairs officer during a 2006. He is one rank away from where McCrash topped out. We know Bush tried to run the war through cheer leading and PR firms . . .

The call to campaign against Wells will be clouded for some by who is his wife. And that fact that she knows how to load a black powder musket.

and what was Al Gore's MOS?

Natalie is more progressive that Erik with a k. (0.00 / 0)
She's also far more popular than he is because of it.

And being a Public Affairs Officer in the Navy meant that he knew that he likely never would see any action in the mideast. It also means that he wasn't very good at it, otherwise he'd be able to raise campaign cash some way other than selling out to the coal industry.

Some voters tend to look for actual qualifications in their elected officials.

Tennant is certainly not progressive on investigating  voting machine irregularities and not likely to replace the one armed bandits foisted on WV by Betty Ireland, but hey, she was on teevee.

I agree on the disappointment of looking into electronic voting issues, though I'm sympathetic about choosing what battles to fight as there's a lack of funds available to do anything about swapping them out yet.

I do give Tennant credit for already expanding voting opportunities. (Satellite early voting and the pilot electronic voting.) She's definitely making moves in the right direction there.

The integrity of the vote (0.00 / 0)
is one of the most important components of a democracy. Can't afford new machines? Go back to paper or at least permit the use of paper ballots at every polling place and allow the people to decide which they want to use, instead of insisting that there is no problem with the electronic voting machines.

Off-topic: Anti-Mollohan robocall from MUSGRAVE (4.00 / 1)
That's right, folks... and I'm not talking about Ronnie Musgrave.

I received a robocall (caller ID said Princeton, WV) from Marilyn Musgrave today. It was an anti-Mollohan robocall. You may recall that Marilyn Musgrave is the former GOP congresswoman from Colorado who sponsored the Marriage Protection Amendment.

So, as you might have guessed, I am not pleased. I despise that woman.

Thanks for all those campaign updates.

Robocalls are cheap and generally ineffective--I hope they backfire and just motivate more folks like you to decide its important to get out and vote for Mollohan instead of someone who craves support from Marilyn Musgrave.

I know the GOP would love to take out Mollohan or Rahall but I still just can't see that happening.

For one, where are they going to find the money? The national GOP doesn't have money to drop in West Virginia. Locally, the coal folks only have so much money to drop and that'll get spread thin pretty fast.

I hear a lot of noise to try and make WV-01 and WV-03 look like potential races but I don't see any there there yet. West Virginians are incredibly reluctant to ditch incumbents with power in Washington. There's got to be some major reasons both to fire the incumbent and to hire the replacement.
