This is an example from our neighbors in Kentucky of the kind of stuff that really undermines public confidence in state regulators.

Coal group hires former state environmental chief

The Kentucky Coal Association announced a new general counsel Tuesday: Lloyd Cress, who was the state's commissioner of environmental protection under former Gov. Ernie Fletcher.

"I look forward to assisting Kentucky's coal industry meet the increasing challenges that it confronts in providing the energy, jobs and tax revenue that benefit Kentucky so greatly," Cress said in a prepared statement.

Cress is married to U.S. District Judge Karen Caldwell.

Cress' hiring is part of a management makeover at the coal association. Last month, the group hired Bill Bissett, chief of staff and senior vice president at Marshall University in West Virginia, as its president.

It would be great if Cress also looked forward to helping the industry meet its challenge to provide all those wonderful benefits as safely as possible, with as little environmental damage as possible, and in ways that met and exceeded the standards set by every regulating body.

But, maybe that's just not what he's getting paid for.

If HCR 34 doesn't prove the point, I don't know what does. (0.00 / 0)
Introduced by John H. Shott (R - Mercer), it disputes the endangerment finding by the EPA which was based on overwhelming scientific evidence by citing so-called "vigorous, legitimate, and substantive" scientific debate to support the recent attempt by U.S. Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) to kill all efforts to regulate greenhouse gases.

Co-sponsors for this coal powered piece of crap are: Delegates Shott, Anderson, Andes, Armstead, Ashley, Azinger, Border, Campbell, Cann, Canterbury, Cowles, Craig, Duke, Eldridge, Ellem, Evans, Hall, Hamilton, Ireland, Louisos, McGeehan, Michael, C. Miller, J. Miller, Morgan, Overington, Porter, Reynolds, Romine, Rowan, Schadler, Schoen, Shook, Sobonya, Spencer, Sumner and Williams

The text of HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 34 is found at this link

While these members of the WV legislature appear to be shamelessly running interference for the coal industry by citing West Virginia's need for jobs, delegate Steve Kominar, D-Mingo) stated stated straight out his belief that the EPA is out to shut down the coal industry.

What's so disturbing about Kominar's declaration is that his criticism of the federal agency came after lawmakers heard updates on improving brownfields in a meeting of the Joint Commission on Economic Development.

FACT:

In 2005, the WV State Legislature recognized the lost economic and social value in abandoned contaminated lands or "brownfields." source

FACT

Mr. Steve Kominar serves as a member of the board of directors. He is a graduate of Ohio State University and the University of Maryland where he earned a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration. He is member of the West Virginia Legislature's House of Delegates where chairs the Committee on Banking and Finance. He is a past member of the Tug Valley Chamber of Commerce board of directors. He also serves on the Board of Advisors at Southern West Virginia Community & Technical College and on the Advisory Council for the Mingo County Adult Education Association. Mr. Kominar has served as an MCRA board member since 2002.

   Phone: (304) 393-3300

And let's not forget about about Sen. Ron Stollings, D-Boone, who, at that same meeting, also lied about the EPA when he

zeroed in on the EPA's insistence that mined-out mountains be restored to natural contours, with mountains even higher than the natural ones before coal was extracted source

I'd love to see him, or anyone for that matter, prove that portion of his above statement which I highlighted in bold italics.

Back in '07, Stollings was appointed Vice-Chair of the Health and Human Resources Committee. The then-freshman lying Senator was also appointed to seven other committees, including Education, Energy, Industry and Mining, Government Organization, and Judiciary. source

Someone should introduce both Stollings and Kominar the exit side of that coal-powered revolving door.
