File this under It's About Time, Dawn Johnsen nomnated again after treading water all last year
The Senate Judiciary Committee voted along party lines to endorse Dawn Johnsen, Barack Obama's nominee for Justice Department legal counsel, after a heated debate Thursday over Johnsen's past statements about abortion and George W. Bush's national security policies.
::::::::
As the meeting came to a close, Leahy made a plea to the Republicans in the room to allow for an up-or-down vote on the Senate floor for Johnsen's confirmation. While confirming he would vote "yes," Leahy emphasized that everyone from either party should get the opportunity to cast a vote. But 60 votes are needed to cut off a likely Republican filibuster of Johnsen's nomination, and it's not clear if any Republicans will cross over yet.
Glad to see this was not punted
*******
Slight health care detour while Bart Stupak D-MI figures out where he lives.
Well the vote count went back up to needing 217 from 216.
U.S. Rep. Nathan Deal will delay his resignation from Congress by three weeks, citing intense pressure from House Republican leaders to remain and vote against President Barack Obama's plan to overhaul the nation's health care system.
Isn't he facing some ethics contracting thingy?
One additional side effect for Deal: By resigning from Congress, the Republican candidate for governor ended an ethics inquiry into whether Deal misused his office in an attempt to protect his private business in north Georgia.
Whether the inquiry could be revived and a report issued over the next three weeks is a question worth asking.
And that is about all they got.
Democratic leaders are still predicting victory in the House. Rep. Joe Crowley of New York, head of the New Democrat Coalition, emerged from a White House meeting with the president, and declared, "when all is said and done, we will have the votes to pass health care reform."
Since the GOP wants to be so helfpul and all.
Recess one week before 4 April is Three weeks. There will be a vote. Otherwise why did Minority Leader Boehner Orange Guy only ask for "three weeks"?
********
John McCain lips are moving, at about 19:00, so he is changing his position and telling a lie about it.
John McCain would pay for his health plan with major reductions to Medicare and Medicaid, a top aide said, in a move that independent analysts estimate could result in cuts of $1.3 trillion over 10 years to the government programs.
In offering amendment today he wants to prevent Medicare adjustment under the Budget Act, because we "just don't do that with a majority vote".
The Balanced Budget Act of 1997, which included reductions in Medicare payments and the creation of the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP). The vote was 85-15 with twelve Republicans and three Democrats opposing the bill.
The Balanced Budget Act of 1995, which sought cuts in Medicaid and welfare programs, restructuring of Medicare and major tax cuts. The vote split 52-47 with one Republican defecting to vote with 46 Democrats against the bill. The bill was ultimately vetoed by President Clinton.
The Deficit Reduction Act of 2005, which included cuts in Medicaid and Medicare. The vote split 50-50 with Vice President Dick Cheney casting the deciding vote. Four Republicans defected to oppose the bill with 46 Democrats. No Democrats voted for the bill.
There are a nice picture at this Sunlight Foundation for those who prefer not to read words. You know who you are.

Key Homeland Security posts go unfilled . You would think that Majority Leader McConnell with his overwhelming 41 - 59 advantage in the Senate would have been called this 'treason'.
The Obama administration, more than a year after taking power, and Congress have not filled some key positions in the Department of Homeland Security -- notably the top jobs at the Transportation Security Administration and Customs and Border Protection.
Together, the two posts manage about half of all DHS employees. But for differing reasons, the posts are unfilled or occupied by placeholders.
::::::::
In the case of Customs and Border Protection, Obama nominated insider Alan Bersin in September. But the Senate Finance Committee -- neck-deep in health care legislation -- has yet to schedule a confirmation hearing, again ensuring that a new boss won't be seated and up to speed until at least midsummer, critics said.
Once again Max proves he is not a closer. Please tell me why he has his hands on any energy legislation.
********
And then we have this. What KagroX wrote about yesterday.
Now a few nominations were cleared today,
The Senate confirmed the following nominations:
Terry Yonkers to be an Assistant Secretary of the Air Force;
Frank Kendall to be deputy Under Secreatry of Defense for Acquisition, Technology, and Logistics;
Erin Conaton to be Under Secretary of the Air Force;
Paul Oostburg Sanz to be General Counsel of the Department of Navy;
Malcolm Ross O'Neill to be an Assistant Secretary of the Army; and
Jackalyne Pfannenstiel to be an Assistant Secretary of the Navy.
********
Ask Sen. Rockefeller if he knows what is happening with the nominations that have already passed through his Commerce Committee.
danps has been thinking about this, too.
To repeat: This is all predicated on the idea that Senate Democrats want to challenge delaying tactics and possess the backbone to see a confrontation through. The point is that they have the tools at their disposal right now. Anyone who talks about additional reforms as a solution is just blowing smoke.
I know it may be off to think that someone who wants to prune back executive power would worry about Senate power, but I guess we all believe that it there is some floor level below which we should not sink.
A relative is delaying with Don't Tred On Me folks on a local trash recycling issue. Yes, those partying folks in the yellow tee shirts are against anything government.
Those against government seem to do their best to make sure it does not work to prove their point.
Even the non-political people in the family understood me this time.
********
This list is what was on the calendar for today, including those six. Let it sink in.
