formerly know as Celebrate healthcare by handing over some personal information

CA Berkeley WV--Email lists often ask for zip code and include an option to connect to other third parties through future emails or other electronic platforms. This is true of product catalogues, news portals, non-profits and political organizations. Always read the opt in / opt out information!

From an email sent by the Organizing for America, part of the Democratic National Committee

(From the President):

(My Name Here) --

I'm writing to you on a great day for America.

This morning, I gathered with members of Congress, my administration, and hardworking volunteers from every part of the country to sign comprehensive health care reform into law. Thanks to the immeasurable efforts of so many, the dream of reform is now a reality.

Here is where the part I question comes in. The email closes with the following ask:

So as we celebrate this great day, I want to invite you to add your name where it belongs: alongside mine as a co-signer of this historic legislation.  Organizing for America will record the names of co-signers as a permanent commemoration of those who came together to make this moment possible...

So, if you haven't yet, please add your name as a proud health care reform co-signer today:

The email explains several aspects of the health care overhaul plan that are implemented immediately. At this point, I want to state that I am not here to comment on the legislation, but what can easily be construed as taking advantage of a political victory to swoop up a bunch of personal information for the purposes of furthering political ideology.

CA Berkeley WV--Before this week, conservative leaning newspapers where generating third party emails in my inbox with the opportunity to click on a link and sign on to petitions that wanted to celebrate the defeat of the legislation by adding your name to a petition. They also wanted my email and location information.

The email then links to the President's social networking component, My.BarackObama.com and which asks that you sign up and give your name, email address and zip code as a condition of being added as a "co-signer" to the legislation. I clicked on the link.

Does anyone else think this is a little strange?  Granted, I have been on the Organizing for America listserv for a while which means I resign myself to receive as many emails as they would like to send. However, I am not a member of the social networking component of the President's political campaign arm. Could this email be an attempt to consolidate members of OFA not otherwise affiliated with the social networking component into said campaign apparatus?

And the zip code. Why would a zip code (or email for that matter) be necessary in order for me to add my name as a "co-signer" of this historic legislation?  I had to click on the link to get to this part.

Why not just be upfront and say, "Hey, we passed a pretty serious piece of legislation. It took a lot of heavy lifting and I would be honored if you would sign up on my campaign arm's social networking site."  I probably would have done it then.

This approach seems disingenuous.

CA Berkeley WV--Maybe. Both sides use emails you get to the social networking site. You already offer some of this information just signing up for the email at the start. Both sides want to use the excitement of current political topic to get you to stay involved. There are days when I don't feel tricked, but like washing my eyes out with bleach after first reading the third party emails and then those Ralph Reed petitions

Online news content providers often ask for your zip code to customize the weather, for example. The Privacy policy for OFA is accessed by a link in the wide disclaimer banner on the bottom of the screen. Don't forget to find and read these every time.

Misleading Headline (4.00 / 2)
Maybe it's just me, but I disagree with your headline.  It seems to imply that health reform is requiring people to turn over their personal information when that's not the case.

The email from Organizing from America may have been inappropriate in your opinion, but since it's an opt in list to get their emails in the first place, and it's optional whether people want to "sign on", I give them the benefit of the doubt on this one.

There have been so many misunderstandings about this legislation and misinformation put forth by the bill's opponents, it's disappointing to see this as a diary on the day we finally pass health care reform.

I don't think you meant it badly, and I don't mean to be overly sensitive. I'm just sayin' I wish it had been worded differently.

In a good conversation everyone speaks.  In a great conversation some even listen.

I have to agree with Wabi-Sabi (4.00 / 1)
Social network is for networking.

Zip code entry by you is voluntary and to that purpose.

I have the Privilege of the Powerful.
Does this represent a personal opinion or that of the ACLU of WV.
Written with a lot of first person pronouns.

Celebrate healthcare by handing over some personal information

Changing the title.
I can't figure out exactly how to demote it off the front page but it should be.

Separate the official from the other sock in the drawer.

Clarification on what was pointed out (0.00 / 0)
Again, the post was not a comment on the substance of healthcare reform legislation.  Nor is it a "personal opinion" or a chisled-in-stone tenet from the ACLU by-laws and policy.

Perhaps the orginal title should have been more thoroughly thought out.  I will concede that if all you read of the diary was the original title, then you possibly could have been left with the impression that the diary was about something it was not.  However, if you read the diary, I believe the point is pretty straightforward.

CA makes a good point in amending his comments into the diary when it comes to making sure to read privacy and opt-out policies when signing up for lists.  Having signed up for OFA's on my own, I submit myself (as pointed out in the diary) to as many emails as they wish to send, and I also understand that within those emails, there will 'asks' of every type.  Fundraising, phonecalls to members of congress, etc.

What was pointed out was that the particular 'ask' in this email seemed to have an end that didn't match up with the means, so to speak.  Asking for my info (via name, email, and zip code) was probably not necessary if OFA wanted to add my name as a "co-signer" of the legislation.  OFA already has my name.  They simply could have transfered my name from there current list to .  But they did not do that.

Again, as stated in the orginal post, I would have been more impressed and likely to give them what they wanted if they had been more up front about the situation.

Simply put, why not say "Hey, this took 14 months to pass and you were a big part.  If you would considering joining my campaign's social networking site, I would be honored."  What would have been wrong with putting it that way?

Thank you. (0.00 / 0)
I think what caught the eye of Clem and Wabi and myself was the title. I appreciate your reaction to the change. For blogging the title and first paragraph are important. You want to draw in readers.

Again, the post was not a comment on the substance of healthcare reform legislation.  Nor is it a "personal opinion" or a chisled-in-stone tenet from the ACLU by-laws and policy.

On the extreme, One Citizen is pushing the limits of using shock value for attention and, for me, it becomes a distraction to any merits of the argument.

OFA already has my name.  They simply could have transfered my name from there current list to.  But they did not do that.

See, for me here asking for info again is better. They are giving you another chance to opt out. And the wide banner at the bottom makes this clear that this is part of a national political party's effort.

For myself one of the biggest yikes I had was that it was written with the ACLU of WV id and that came with it the weight the card in my wallet. Several months again #WRNJ were making the false claim that the White House was collecting everyone's information. Our concern, with a new troll here, was feeding the beast. It seemed like a personal reaction, a valid one, and possibly you may want to consider another log in for this area of interest.
