News From Mollohan For Congress

Mike Oliverio's Dangerous Plan for Law Enforcement

His "nice start" would slice funding from local law enforcement, other Justice Department programs

Morgantown, W. Va. -  Congressman Alan B. Mollohan's campaign demanded more information from Michael Oliverio about his proposal to cut federal law enforcement funding in West Virginia.

"This is the wrong time to gamble on public safety," Pam Van Horn, Mollohan's campaign manager said.  "We were all reminded this weekend that we live in a very dangerous world.  Michael Oliverio's answer is to cut resources for the law enforcement professionals we depend upon to keep us safe."

Oliverio recently told a West Virginia newspaper he would slash $30 billion in an 'across-the-board' cut of all federal programs.  The FBI, the Drug Enforcement Administration, and other Justice Department programs would shoulder approximately $285 million of those cuts.  Oliverio called his plan "a nice start," implying he would support additional cuts in the future.

"How much would Michael Oliverio take from the COPS program, which has provided grants to each sheriff's department in the 1st District and police departments throughout the state?" Van Horn asked.  "These grants have allowed law enforcement to upgrade equipment that has kept officers safe and have provided technology that has made it easier to catch criminals."

The COPS - or Community Oriented Policing Services - program is part of the Bureau of Justice Assistance, which provides financial and technical assistance to local law enforcement agencies.

"Alan Mollohan knows how important these grants are to local police and sheriffs, particularly in tough economic times," added Van Horn.  "Alan Mollohan is working to deliver these grants to 1st District law enforcement.  Michael Oliverio wants to cut them."

Mollohan has directed more than $5 million in COPS grants to local law enforcement agencies over the past five years.  Oliverio, in contrast, said that he would have voted against a supplemental appropriations bill last year that provided COPS funding for Clarksburg, Fairmont, Morgantown, Wheeling and six other 1st District police departments to hire a total of 15 additional officers.

Meeting in Wheeling this afternoon with sheriffs and police chiefs from throughout the 1st District, Mollohan pledged his continued support for law enforcement officers and their work.

role of government (4.00 / 1)
I believe that government of the people and by the people--be it local, state, or federal--is truly a net benefit in our lives.

One of the reasons I'm proud to be a Democrat is because the Democratic party is the party that believes that a well-run government can do good. Republicans, on the other hand, have an natural distrust for government and their cynicism shows when it comes to how poorly they run government when they are in charge.

A $30bn across-the-board budget cut is too small to meaningfully impact the deficit, yet large enough to have visible negative consequences to West Virginians.

I'd like to know more about what Mike Oliverio's positive vision is for how to improve government's role in our lives... that is, if he has one.

cut everything (0.00 / 0)
we cant keep spending...cut everything X percent and make everybody feel the pain...its the only thing to do

its hardly "the only thing to do" (4.00 / 1)
We could, for example, cut defense spending by quite a bit more as that takes up approximately 50% of our discretionary spending. That would, arguably, cause a lot less pain.

We could also, for example, raise taxes on a very small number of people back to, say, what they were when Ronald Reagan was president.

There are lots of options.

reply to my comment shows exactly why nothing of substance will ever be done to cure the problem....everybody has their view of what should and should not be cut...every politician has his own little pet projects he needs to funnel money back home to keep getting elected...i say cut everything across the board...defense, social programs, highways, nasa, you name it, i say cut it...that has to be the first step....

leadership is about making difficult choices (4.00 / 1)
Leadership is about making difficult choices, not running the government via sound-bite slogans like across-the-board-cuts. That's a total cop-out.

Besides, I reject the entire premise that we need to cut spending. That's a very Republican idea. When government is doing good, the answer is to put more money in the programs that are doing to most good and stop spending money on the programs that aren't.

Federal tax rates are at something like a 40 year low. If you want to figure out how to cut the deficit it makes more sense to talk about raising income than it does to reduce expenditures.

i disagree (0.00 / 0)
wholeheartedly...sound bite slogan?...lol!!!... our so-called leaders idea of making difficult choices is to do what they think will keep them in office and not whats fiscally responsible...and i can see why you agree with that theory...you dont have a dog in the fight cause its not your money...to hell with cuts, just keep going back to those who produce in this ecomomy, right?

do you get more votes in your tax bracket? (4.00 / 1)
I proudly pay plenty of taxes and would happily pay even more. But, really, what difference does that make?

It doesn't matter what tax bracket I'm in, my vote counts exactly the same as yours. Our country is, thankfully, a democracy where it is one person one vote, not one dollar one vote.

I didn't know you were in the top 1% of income earners in the country, but if you are, you can definitely afford to have your income taxes raised back to what they were when Ronald Reagan was president.

If you are such a selfish bastard that you don't want to pay higher taxes, worry not. There's plenty of unemployed folks who will be glad to fill your shoes after you go Galt.

pay more...each time you file your 1040 instead of just checking the box to give a dollar to obama include another check for 10 grand just cause you want to...btw, the top 1 percent is a nice place to be...but just cause youre in that place is not reason to pay higher taxes...the law should be changed...you dont eran income and pay taxes you cant vote...

Law? Change the Law?

Grasshopper, you forget about the Fourteenth Amendment to your beloved Constitution.

not all persons are equal (4.00 / 1)
According to the GOP, corporations are people too. Money = speech to them, and that's why they covet Don Blankenship types. Many right-wingers adamantly defend the rights of Exxon to spend away on an election. How does that protect my freedom as an individual? I, at best, can donate a couple hundred bucks to political campaigns and according to their position my speech is therefore worth less than Don's or Exxon's (since it's a person too).

Hopefully all of the corporate spending will backfire again this fall like it did in 08 and 06.
