A tale of two investigations

Ken Ward Jr. at Coal Tattoo asks an interesting question in how the investigation into the Gulf of Mexico oil well explosion is public, but the investigation into the Upper Big Branch disaster is behind closed doors.

So why can the Obama administration do this for an oil industry catastrophe and not for a coal-mining disaster?

The cynical part of me thinks it's because the nation has for decades seen West Virginia as a national sacrifice zone and they don't want to know what happens here.

Cynical part? History reveals that the cynical angle is most likely the reality. (0.00 / 0)
We (Carnacki, you and I) who are actually old enough to have had history classes realize that in Middle Age marauders poisoned wells as they swept across eastern Europe as a strategy to either kill off local leaders or force them to submit.

Coal operators have been doing essentially the same for at least a century even as they've bought off off those who otherwise would have regulated them.

Lest you think I'm overstating here, ask yourself, please. Just why would the WV Department of Environmental Protection ever in a zillion years leave it entirely up to the coal operators to monitor the sludge that the WV DEP authorized to be injected into abandoned coal mines?

Carnacki, I respect that you're likely more politically astute than I regarding WV, so I sincerely hope that you won't think I'm talking down to you when pointing out what is historically obvious to me even as I'm just now become politically aware locally.
