Republicans apologize

The fact Republicans apologized to a foreign owned oil company for the government holding them accountable for the Gulf of Mexico spill should come as no surprise. Republicans are always looking out for the interests of big business over everyone else. Look at how Republican Rep. Shelley Moore Capito -- and sadly too many of our Democrats -- bow to King Coal in this state.

Any day now, I expect Capito will demand an apology from the residents of the Gulf Coast for getting their sandy beaches, seawater and wildlife in BP's oil.

Those "far left nuts" were right once again. They aren't happy to be right. Too bad the "right" is never right.

When a man embarks upon a crime, he is morally guilty of any other crime which may spring from it. Sherlock Holmes.

Divided government is one thing, your cynicism is another. (0.00 / 0)
(well except for the far left nuts who are quietly enjoying the crisis as a crutch for their cause).

Is this like taking advantage of an attack by a non-state terrorist entity to start a war with some nation of choice?

What this points to a the fallacy in the idea that business acting in its own enlightened self-interest will always produce the outcome that benefits the entire society. Hence the need for government action, not gridlock.

Irony: Dawn works so well cleaning oil-soaked birds because one of the ingredients is petroleum based.

The coal industry in 2009 paid $307.3 million in severance taxes, corporate net income tax, business franchise tax and other taxes. But, the state spends $113.7 million to support units of government that regulate mining and for the repair of the state's coal haul roads. So, the report concludes that industry in this respect provided a net benefit to the state budget of about $193.6 million.

WV Gazette -- Coal industry and state budget

The state provides  variety of tax credits and subsidies that amounted to nearly $174 million in 2009 - all of which show up as "expenditures," or costs to the state budget of the coal industry.
