Look for Republican John Rease to join 3 Dems in WV-SEN race

So far there have been three Democrats file for WV-SEN: the heavily favored, Gov. Joe Manchin; mountain-top removal activist Ken Hechler; and former Mon County delegate Sheirl Fletcher.

John RaeseNo one has filed yet from the Republican party, but I fully expect that John Raese will. I think he's going to wait until the last minute with the hopes of luring at least one other Republican into the primary.

Why?

Because it is in John Rease's personal interest to have both a contested Republican primary and to have as heavily contested as possible general election. He'll invest a modest amount of his own wealth to keep both races as competitive as possible.

After all, what is one of the biggest differences between a lightly contested and a heavily contested election? The amount of media spending.

And, what would be a nice unexpected windfall for John Raese's West Virginia media empire? Heavy media spending for a contested special Senate election.

Update from Carnacki: Raese makes it official he's in.

As noted in earlier comments, she ran to Rockefeller's right when she challenged him in 2008. She was a non-factor in that primary.

Her entry into the race is helpful for Manchin. It keeps it from being a two person Manchin v. Hechler primary. If there are debates--and I certainly expect and hope there will be--it'll help Manchin look even more like the "just right" option. On the issues where Manchin and Fletcher agree vs. Hechler (of which there may be many), they'll be someone other than Manchin to help respond.

Raese is in... (4.00 / 2)
He just announced on Hoppy's radio show that he also owns.

Raese is crazy and will say anything and spend anything - hopefully some of it will "trickle down"  outside of his media empire.

Fletcher is certifiable crazy-town. I spoke with her at a Dem rally in the 2008 primary and felt sorry for her mental condition. Even though she used to be a Republican she was very moderate pro-labor and pro-choice so I don't think she will campaign on Manchin's right.

What's up with this? (4.00 / 1)
In addition to Raese, four other candidates have also filed to run for U.S. Senate as Republicans.

They are Thomas Ressler from Falling Waters and Albert Howard whose address with the Secretary of State's Office is listed as San Pedro, California.  Those also filing on Thursday include Lynette Kennedy McQuain from Rivesville, Scott Williams from Buckhannon, Kenneth Culp from Summersville and Daniel Scott Rebich from Buckhannon.

Now, I'm wondering. Is Albert Howard African-American, Republican, and the former candidate for U.S. President?

Albert Howard announced his candidacy for Senate Tuesday to replace the late Robert Byrd.

On WV residence and elections (4.00 / 2)
According to the WV Code, a candidate need only have established residency on or before election day to be eligible. As I understand it, anyone from anywhere (aged 30+) can run.

Clarification (0.00 / 0)
WV Code doesn't hold much sway in filing for this race.  Though the impact is still the same, the US Constitution (and federal court decisions) are the controlling law.  And the Constitution doesn't even require "residency"...merely that one be an "inhabitant" of the state at the time he is elected.

Mr. Howard ran for President in New Hampshire in 2008.  I think he got 44 votes.

A guy from California?  Guess here's another thing the legislature needs to fix.  Who wrote these regulations anyway?  Daffy Duck?

Here's the full list of Republican candidates (with one full day left in the filing period):

Harry C. Bruner, Jr.
Charleston, WV 25324

Kenneth A. Culp
Summersville, WV 26651

Albert Howard
San Pedro, CA 90731

Lynette Kennedy McQuain
Rivesville, WV 26588

Charles G. "Bud" Railey
Bridgeport, WV 26330

John R. Raese
Morgantown, WV 26507

Daniel Scott Rebich
Buckhannon, WV 26201

Thomas Ressler
Falling Waters, WV 25419

Mac Warner
Morgantown, WV 26508

Scott H Williams
Buckhannon, WV 26201

John Raese and Mac Warner are the only two names I recognize... anyone else see someone with a political history of note?

Those are the only two I recognize. There seem to be a lot of (4.00 / 1)

Let's get Ed Shultz or Rachel Maddow to run. Stephen Colbert? (0.00 / 0)
If you don't have to be a resident, how about a high profile progressive with name recognition? Maybe it's Chris Mathews chance. He almost ran in Pennsylvania.

Stephen Colbert would have a blast of a campaign. He could run against Jon Stewart.

The possibilities are endless.

We really need to fix this law.

In a good conversation everyone speaks.  In a great conversation some even listen.

Unfortunately... (0.00 / 0)
Changing the law means changing the US Constitution.  Not an easy task.

Residency Requirements aren't in Constitution (4.00 / 1)
We could require residency at the time someone files - not waiting until election day.

Raese may be running but his website is a blank page... (4.00 / 1)
Check out http://www.raeseforsenate.org/.  I know the Republicans are trying to avoid the issues, but this is ridiculous. :-)

It's a blank screen with a BLUE background. Maybe he's trying to follow the Alvin Greene playbook from South Carolina?

One person who benefits from all of this (4.00 / 2)
is Rep. Nick Rahall.

Don and Spike's only chance to buy the seat was to count on a low turnout off-year election and hope the teabaggers were motivated just enough more than Democrats..

Now, with a high-profile U.S. Seante race on the ballot featuring the state's most popular Democrat, Rahall gets a boost on his base's turnout.

God sez, "Albert Howard will be Prez" (0.00 / 0)
No kidding, folks.

Republican candidate for the U.S. Senate from West Virginia and self-proclaimed prophet, Albert Howard, says on his website that God has destined him to be President of the United States.

http://alberthoward.org/uts.aspx

In 1991 outside of the U.S. Army Bands office there was such a time in Albert's life. A crucial time to hear and a place where things were revealed. "You will be the next President of the United States". Albert asked:"when?" The answer was: "After Bush".

Now, stay with me. This was at the time when George H. W. Bush was in office and nobody knew about Clinton or George W. Bush. But the eternal source, which is Our Father, knows everything from the beginning to the end and He was giving Albert a glimpse of his Purpose.
