Senate Frontrunners Are Raking in Big Money

Campaign cash galore.  Joe Manchin III, the current frontrunner and expected nominee for the Democratic Party on the Senate Special Election, is raking in some serious campaign cash prior to the election.

Politico recently reported on the hard numbers in regards to campaign donations for Manchin, and the leading GOP candidate John Raese.

West Virginia Gov. Joe Manchin (D) raked in an impressive $418,000 for his Senate bid so far, although his chief Republican opponent already has a significant bankroll.

The popular governor is the front-runner in the Aug. 28 primary and the Nov. 2 special election for the late Robert Byrd's Senate seat. Public polls show him leading mining company owner John Raese by double digits.

Reports indicate that Raese has put roughly $320,000 of his own money into his campaign.  An outrageously high amount, but still not enough to match Manchin's campaign contributions.

Manchin has been significantly helped out by Jay Rockefeller, who Politico claims helped raise nearly $200,000 for Manchin over the course of this campaign that opened only just a few weeks ago.

Manchin seems to already be thinking past the primary to the actual Special Election, his sights are set on that prized Senate seat vacated by the late, great Robert C. Byrd earlier in the summer.

Manchin and Raese, as of right now, seem to be the ones who will be nominated for their respected parties going into the general election.  Manchin already holds a significant lead on Raese, but I expect that... given Raese's clear dedication to his campaign.... he will be pulling out all of the stops necessary to try to gain on Manchin's lead.  The WVGOP wants to have a (R) in the Senate for West Virginia desperately, and I doubt they'll be afraid to sling a little mud along the way.

I don't expect the Democrats to lose the seat

I talked with an old friend today (4.00 / 1)
who is disappointed that folks likely won't support Ken Hechler because he chose to run only on one issue.

At least Hechler is honest, because as far as I can tell,  Manchin is also one issue candidate, but he just won't admit it.

You'll have to guess what that one issue is, because the coalpatch media certainly isn't going to ask Manchin any tough questions. Like why he's never spent our allotment of the stimulus money, or how he can explain ignoring all the illness, death, and destruction that Big Coal has proven  to have done since surface mining became so prevalent here?

Regarding that stimulus money, some folks think that Manchin hasn't spent it because if he can get the unemployment rate cranked up high enough here, more people will move off his precious coal, and more Coalocrats can be elected to push out real Democrats. It appears to be sort of a coalpatch "shock n' awe" strategy.

Manhin may be trying to figure out how to convert the stimulus to scrip so he can dole what's left of it out as paychecks to the few drag line and 'dozer operators who took the jobs of all the real mine workers in this state.

irrelevant as usual.  Manchin loves coal, gas, oil, gambling, strip clubs, dirty water et al while Ken H could be put in the opposite category on most all those issues. Ken is more than a one issue candidate.

When Ken visited Clarksburg last week (4.00 / 1)
he spoke at length on many issues in addition to MTR. He addressed the economy, the wars, taxes, energy legislation and other topics.
Ken Hechler is a very intelligent and dynamic individual and is well able to fulfill the duties of a senator. In fact he might wake a few of them up. Physically he is in far better health than Robert Byrd was in the last 4 or so years of his life.

Why Joe for Senate? (1.00 / 1)
Vote Joe Manchin for U.S. Senate because he values teachers and education, children sitting on school busses for two+ hours,  supports pay raises (not in the form of food stamps) for public workers and their struggling families, cutting PEIA subsidies for new hires, including teachers; alternative energy (what is renewable?), including investing in clean coal technology, more clean coal technology, and did I mention clean coal technology and that cost effective carbon sequestration stuff that is proven to work? Vote Manchin because he loves the environment and valley fills and understands flooding is most certainly caused by acts of God, not mountaintop removal mining. Vote for Manchin for all that economic activity taking place on reclaimed MTR sites (meth labs and whore houses don't count). Vote for Manchin because he hearts the EPA and all things regulation from environmental (MTR, coal slurry injection/impoundments, mercury in the water/fish, fairness for Dupont in the court system) to workforce safety (Upper Big Branch Mine Disaster). Vote Manchin because he "reformed" Workers Compensation and doctors all across WV love taking BrickStreet, and most importantly, do it for Jesus!

It's God's will! (0.00 / 0)
