WV AFL-CIO surprised by Manchin

Now the WV AFL-CIO is calling Gov. Joe Manchin out on his support for the Bush plan to cut taxes on the wealthiest Americans while denigrating President Obama's plan of tax cuts for the middle-class and lower income.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- A top West Virginia union official says he was taken aback by Gov. Joe Manchin's support for extending tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans.

"When there's a tremendous outcry about deficit spending, to continue the Bush tax cuts for the wealthiest in the belief that it's somehow going to stimulate our economy, it defies logic," Matheney said. "I think anyone supporting the extension of the Bush tax cuts for the wealthiest is disappointing, and it was surprising."

The tax cuts are set to expire at the end of the year. President Obama and many Democrats want to extend them for 98 percent of Americans - households earning less than $250,000. Under their proposal, Americans who earn more than that would see their taxes rise, though not to the level they were before the cuts.

The AFL-CIO is still backing him because if Republicans like Raese win, they'd seek to end workplace safety regulations. Afterall as his good friend Don Blankenship has said the deaths of workers is just the cost of doing business.

Good point about Raese and Blankenship. (4.00 / 1)
Another point in favor of Manchin is that the more surface mines we have the fewer miners there are a risk.

Because, after all, surface mining takes the miners out of the mines. In fact, it puts most of them out of work!

Oh but wait a second. Both Manchin and Raese support surface mining as well, so that'd actually make them both "safety oriented" when it comes to deep miners, wouldn't it?

What's most surprising about the AFL-CIO sticking with Manchin is that its leadership totally ignores the fact that there is only one candidate that holds a trade union card that's affiliated with the AFL-CIO. And Jesse Johnson actually earned it by practicing his trade, unlike some bogus degree handed down because of political connections (think Heather Bresch).

Fact is, Manchin only started getting tough and enforcing deep mine regulations after miners died during his administration. Except for lip service, he's never really done a thing for the unions, and likely never will.

compared to an Ayn Rand-ian nut like Raese, Manchin's a saint (4.00 / 1)
Raese's philosophy calls for the elimnation of all labor and safety standards. that's why he's proud of the fact that he wants to eliminate the minimum wage. He's every bit as much of  an extremist as Rand Paul and Christine O'Donnell.

the choice is crystal clear for labor here.

where is the outrage (4.00 / 2)
If folks want to keep Manchin honest then there must be more criticism of the radical stances he is taking and a real threat that Democrats will not vote for him.  The lunacy of Raece is noted but our postings and ultimately our votes are the only leverage we have that will keep Manchin from selling the farm.

Oh come on, they're surprised?? (4.00 / 1)
Are they new here?  Didn't they notice the chamber endorsed him?
