My Feedback to Manchin: Sorry I Voted For Him

Dear Senator Manchin:

You've been in office less than a month and I'm already sorry I voted for you.  Why are you against tax cuts for the middle class?  Why are you against a bill that would help us finally get the deficit under control?  Why did you essentially support the Republicans in their bid to obstruct every single thing we try to do to make this country better?  You voted to not even TAKE A VOTE on middle class tax cuts.  What possible reason could you have for doing this?

foxfoot :: My Feedback to Manchin: Sorry I Voted For Him
I read your lukewarm statement about your vote.  It's either highly naive or a sign of who you really represent.  Trying to build a bridge?  Really?  The Republican Minority leader has already said they will filibuster EVERYTHING.  And today you joined them in making sure this measure WON'T EVEN COME UP FOR A VOTE!  If you don't like the bill, fine.  Vote against it.  I would still wonder why the heck you would be against tax cuts for the middle class.  But at least you would have let the Senate HAVE A VOTE on this legislation.

You voted against the middle class today.  You voted to raise taxes on everybody.  You voted to stand with Republicans who have a strategy of just filibustering EVERYTHING that doesn't cave in to all their demands.  You showed that you don't care about the middle class at all unless it's as a bargaining chip to get tax cuts for your rich corporate friends.  I am sorry I ever voted for you.  You can be sure that I won't make that mistake again.

Sincerely,

"Foxfoot"
(I used my real name in the feedback submitted through his senate page web form)

Just noticed his senate web page is up. It wasn't just a few days ago. I added a link to his brand spanking new Senate web form in your diary.

Thanks for promoting and for linking (0.00 / 0)
That's the web form I used to let him know my thoughts.  I'll most likely be calling the office line tomorrow as well.  Do we know of anyone to Manchin's left who could pose a credible challenge in 2012?  Don't suppose Mollohan would want to run for Senate.

Since Mollohan couldn't win his district, it's doubtful (0.00 / 0)
he could win the state.

possibilities (4.00 / 1)
For all of the many things I liked about Mollohan, I think his career as an elected official is pretty well done.

Recent history suggests credible primary challenges from the left are one of the few things that do make a major difference in enacting progressive policy in DC.

I have no idea where any such candidate would emerge from, though. Running for Congress, Gov., or one of other big 5 jobs in Charleston would be far more appealing to most people than taking on someone with such favorability.

Could the corruption issue stick? (0.00 / 0)
I know the feds are investigating Manchin's administration and even older campaigns.  Anyone think there's anything really damaging there?  I'm also surprised he didn't take much heat for his daughter getting a free Master's Degree from WVU awhile back.

Or hell, given that the state Supreme Court has a special session to determine the fate of a high school football game, maybe we could blame him for WVU not going to a BCS bowl by showing he had a hand in hiring Bill Stewart.  That would probably be the only thing to get people's attention.

Mollohan already filed to run in 2012 (4.00 / 1)
Not for Senate, but for his old House seat.  I actually called his Wheeling office today to say thank you for his vote on the House tax cut bill (thinking I should spend at least as much time thanking people for good votes as I was chastising them for awful ones).  The woman I spoke to said he has already filed to be a candidate in 2012.  I know it would be an uphill battle for him, but I really think people are going to already be sick of Republican incompetence in two years.  McKinley is a terrible candidate and a terrible hypocrite.  The media never reports on it up here in the north but we can get the word out.

I wrote about McKinley's hypocrisy on DailyKose after the News-Register would not print my letter to the editor exposing it.  Charleston Gazette did later pick up on the story that I link to after Oliverio complained to the AP about it (the same day I called in to tip them off!)

Shock! Wheeling paper wouldn't print? (4.00 / 2)
I am surprised... NOT

Since they were practically part of McKinley's campaign (0.00 / 0)
No, it wasn't surprising.

Thanks for the Link (4.00 / 3)
I made sure that Joe got my feedback on the tax issue. Supporting Republicans as a Democrat never helped anybody (except for lonesome Joe Lieberman). My fear is that Democrats as well as the Republicans will now give Mitch McConnell and his friends the ammo they need to give the oligarchy what they want... more money,

who do we have to primary Manchin in 2012? (4.00 / 1)
There's GOT to be someone who will vote for the best interest of WVians and not their own pockets........

I wrote to Manchin today (4.00 / 2)
Can you see the political ad right now?

Manchin voted AGAINST middle class tax cuts.

Manchin voted FOR tax cuts for the wealthy.

Joe Manchin-------- doesn't support ordinary West Virginians.

Check out my latest diary (0.00 / 0)
The new tax compromise deal actually raises taxes on way more West Virginians than the Democratic plan would.

Yes, I promoted both of them. After a diary or two Clem and I usually leave off the "Promoted by" tag.

When you cross post though, and I always think it's a good idea because this site does attract a lot of West Virginia eyes, it might help to include the link so those of us here can also hit the recommend button there and maybe help it get on the recommended diary list, or whatever that is going to be called once DK4 launches any day now.

Ah, good idea (4.00 / 1)

Called Today, Woman I Spoke With Sounded Really Sad (4.00 / 5)
I almost felt bad when her whole demeanor changed after hearing my concern.  I basically just said I was very disappointed that Senator Manchin would not just vote against middle class tax cuts, but that he voted to NOT EVEN VOTE on middle class tax cuts.  I said I was disappointed that he stood up with a Republican minority that has been blocking EVERYTHING til they get tax cuts for the rich.  I was very polite and didn't raise my voice or anything, but said I just wanted to know what possible explanation Senator Manchin could have for being against middle class tax cuts.  Of course, she wasn't authorized to give me any kind of answer on that, and she sounded so sad at the end that I almost felt bad for calling.

But these kind of calls need to flood his offices this week!
