Mollohan mulls 2012 comeback

by: Carnacki

One of our commenters, foxtrot, had this scoop yesterday. Here's Politico's story today:

Rep. Alan Mollohan, who lost the seat he held for nearly three decades in a Democratic primary, is looking into a comeback bid for 2012.

The West Virginia congressman, an Appropriations Committee cardinal whose father also served in the House, has already opened a campaign account with the Federal Election Commission and informed his top political allies in the state that he is pondering another run.

snip

"He has been around everywhere - a lot more places now than before the election. If he had been this active before the primary, he would have won," said Marion County Commissioner Butch Tennant, a Mollohan friend and ally. "Everyone I talk to thinks he ought to run again."

"I think Alan has been a public servant for so long - it's in his blood," added Tennant. "He's going to be lost not being in the House."

not feeling it (0.00 / 0)
I liked Mollohan and thought he voted pretty good most of the time, but I'm not feeling a comeback here. Unfortunately he's just not the best campaigner.

Maybe a chastened Mollohan might be better?

Hard to say at this point but (0.00 / 0)
hopefully voters will see that teabagger McKinnely doesn't represent their interests and when the money Mollohan got appropriated for his district runs out and McKinnely can't bring home the bacon then we can see if he has a chance.

Someone told me he got 3,000 write-in votes and that many (especially union folk) left it blank rather than vote for Oliverio.

Agree he did a lousy job campaigning (4.00 / 1)
He never had any serious opposition before then. Hard to call McKinley serious opposition but then again he won.

mixed feelings (4.00 / 2)
Alan is not and has never been a liberal, so right off I do not agree with him on some significant things (choice, coal, etc.).  However, he was not a total stooge of the corporations and would usually stand up for centrist Democratic economic positions.  More than I can say for either his primary or general election opponents.

What burned me up most in the 1st district congressional election was the dishonest attack on Alan about his alleged corruption.  This was a creation of the vast right wing conspiracy, pure and simple.  Whether he can recover from this terribly unfair tarring I do not know.

Beg to differ (4.00 / 1)
The dishonest attack alleging corruption might have originated in the right wing, but it was used by WV Democratic party regulars. These same politicians encouraged Oliverio to not only run, but to perpetuate the lies about Mollohan's "ethics problems" even though they had been disproven. We are also aware that Mollohan didn't campaign and actually rebuffed offers of help until the last couple of weeks when it became evident that he was in trouble.

A chastened and enlightened Mollohan might be able to make a comeback, but the big question is, can we find a winning candidate that would be better (read that more to the left) than him? That said, I would rather have Mollohan than McKinley or some DINOcrat.

I can't see him being successful in any comeback (4.00 / 1)
I voted for him in the primary and was bummed when he lost; I doubt he can make a comeback with all the ethics issues.  With the Ogden papers so dominant in the district, Mollohan won't be able to get the truth out about the issues.

MAYBE NOT: McKinley vs. Mollohan (4.00 / 3)
I would not assume a McKinley vs. Mollohan rematch. CD1 is going to change. McKinley and Mollohan live far enough apart, there is no guarantee the district will still include both of them.

Does Mollohan have a lot of friends in the West Virginia legislature? If so, they might be even more inclined to put the Northern Panhandle in a district with Kanawha and Marion County with the Eastern Panhandle.

In this case, Mollohan would be the "incumbent" for the "open" district. Incumbent Republicans Capito and McKinley would be vying for the same seat (presumably, given the thin GOP bench, one of them would run for a different office). Rahall's district would be little changed.

Forget politics (4.00 / 1)
Geographically that makes the most sense. "Our" "representative" Capito knows next to nothing about the Eastern Panhandle and why should she? It's a six hour drive from Charleston, it mostly votes for her no matter how little the people know about her, and she could live here and still work in DC but chooses not to.

I live in Tyler County (4.00 / 1)
so I'd end up in any district with McKinley; putting him in with Capito would be a nightmare for me

I can't imagine which one would be worse at my congress critter

Now the Charleston Gazette has the story.
