Fairmont, W.Va. - Natalie Tennant, who has broken down barriers throughout her life serving as the first female WVU Mountaineer mascot, launched her campaign to become Governor at Colasessano's restaurant today surrounded by her family, friends, and supporters.

Tennant said she is running to improve the quality of life for all West Virginians, improve our economy, and to create jobs for this generation and for the next.

"We are going to promote innovative ways to create jobs and educate our children, and more responsible fiscal policy. West Virginia can be a leader now in all these areas. We cannot wait any longer."

The Marion County native is known for having a common sense approach to state government, bringing transparency and cutting red tape.

"I don't sit on the sidelines. I roll up my sleeves," she told supporters when asked about ensuring the rights of all West Virginians to cast their ballot.

In 2008, Tennant successfully ran for Secretary of State. She comfortably won that election and in January 2009 was sworn in as the 29th West Virginia Secretary of State.

During her tenure, Tennant broke new ground not only through her practical use of technology but also through initiatives that made the voting process more streamlined, secure, and accessible. Tennant promoted accountability and transparency in government through use of technology including social media websites, such as Twitter and Facebook, and through live video streams on the internet.

Tennant announced her candidacy at a family-owned local business, continuing on her history of promoting small businesses and the economy in the Secretary of State's Office. As a former small business owner, Tennant made it a priority of her administration to make it easier for businesses to focus on their product and not paperwork by making more services available online. Her administration also did away with online transaction fees to help business owners save money.

"I'm proud of what I have done as Secretary of State. I knew we had to make it easier for small business owners, and that's what I've done. When government helps business reduce paperwork, that's a new kind of leadership."

Natalie all the way! (4.00 / 2)
Natalie is the right woman for the job! She has brought recognition to this state through her amazing progress in reforming the voting quality. I believe she will help advance West Virginia's reputation, achieve a plentiful surplus, and create countless jobs with her positive attitude and common sense style government! I hope that all West Virginians will realize that Natalie is the right woman for the job!

Ego getting the best of her (0.00 / 0)
This is a sad day for the party.  Natalie has let her ego get the best of her.  She does not have the experience needed to be governor in these trying times.  Moreover, she will not be able to raise the money necessary to combat the massive amounts of money that the Republican candidate will have if she is lucky and wins the primary.  She has admitted that she has no campaign organization statewide and has no money to fund such an organization.  She keeps talking about "extraordinary vision" yet has not shown any West Virginian what her vision is.  She has no plan, just good talking points.

Why the Tennant Bashing? (4.00 / 2)
Alanshore,
Why do you continue to disparage Natalie Tennant?  Some of the establishment don't want Tennant to win because she doesn't owe them anything.  I think that freshness is needed in West Virginia politics.  I prefer my politicians independent, not beholden to years of special interest promises.

As far as the appeal to fear about her ability to win against a Republican, she polls ahead of all the Republicans in the race.  Hell, she polls ahead of the other Democrats too (Tomblin being neck and neck with her).

I think the anti-Tennant approach is going to turn off female voters.  If the old boys club are effective in tearing Tennant down then watch the most crucial demographic in the Democratic Party, women, support Ireland or stay home.

I keep hearing about candidates vision for the state.  I am not anti Perdue, who seems to be your guy, but what is Perdue's in depth policy strategy?  No candidate that I am aware of has laid out a detailed policy plan.

Intuitively, I feel like she's my favorite Dem (0.00 / 0)
But she doesn't seem to have much in the way off issue positions.  I realize that she literally just got into the race, but does anyone know where she stands on any issues currently before the legislature?  Or on national issues for that matter?  I like the idea of a "fresh" candidate who is hopefully out of the old boys network and not beholden to Big Coal or Big..whatever else.  But is she that candidate?

Can't help you on most issues, but she's pro choice. (4.00 / 1)

spoke with her recently (0.00 / 0)
and she had no real understanding of the MTR issue and merely repeated the Manchin talking points when attempting to discuss the EPA decision on the Spruce Mine permit. She finally admitted that she really didn't know much about it. I told her she should be reading Coal Tattoo if she was interested in getting some facts.

I'm torn between her and Kessler (0.00 / 0)
not sure who to support at this time

Kessler hinting he may not run in 2011 (4.00 / 1)
I think Kessler is measuring his options and may elect to remain in Senate. Probably with an eye towards remaining as Presiding Officer.

He said on the record he won't raise money while the Legislature is in Session.  That makes it tough for a May primary.

In a good conversation everyone speaks.  In a great conversation some even listen.

He shouldn't run in 2011 (0.00 / 0)
Jeff Kessler is a serious leader with a strong future. He should garner more recognition as Senate President before running for a full term. Remember, the person elected in 2011 CANNOT run in 2016.

WV Constitution, Article 7, Section 4

A person who has been elected or who has served as governor during all or any part of two consecutive terms shall be ineligible for the office of governor during any part of the term immediately following the second of the two consecutive terms.

may be a good choice to run against McKinley in the 1st CD if Mollohan doesn't try a comeback.

Tomblin is Manchin's man, and Manchin intends to continue to exert control/influence at the state level through him. The Manchin Machine will do whatever is necessary to thwart all others - especially Natalie. To survive, natalie is going to need 1) a statewide organization, and 2) bare knuckles on both hands.

More like brass knuckles on both hands

timing (0.00 / 0)
Could set up really interesting timing... if Manchin is seen to undermine a popular Dem. Gov. candidate in 2011 -- esp. after they've won the nomination -- that would generate significant energy for a Democratic primary challenger in his 2012 Senate re-election campaign.

I think Joe Manchin is in a tenuous position right now. He had a lot more sway as Gov. than as a rookie Sen. He has not been a Senator long enough to accumulate power in DC--he's low man on a totum pole of 100.

I'd like to think Manchin is self-interested enough to offer full support to whomever wins the Dem. primary. But, he keeps surprising me with rookie mistakes. So maybe he would be over-confident enough to think he can alienate a significant portion of state Dems and still win re-election.

[ Parent ]
alienation (4.00 / 1)
I'd say he has alienated quite a few Democrats with his actions ever since he took office. If he isn't being ego-driven Joe, he's making some blunder (not showing up to vote) or showing his ignorance (EPA permitting process) on things he should know about (coal subsidies). Now he's galloping around the state on a "common sense tour" once again proving that he has none.

chamber party (4.00 / 2)
Manchin would think nothing of doing nothing to help the WV Dem candidate in the gib race if its not Tomblin. Ask Mollohan, Barth, etc. Manchin doesnt think in partisan terms. He thinks in terms of the Manchin Party - which is interested only in commerce and eschews social issues as a big divisive waste of time.
