Raese passes on governor's race

Despite the efforts of wingnuts in the state to draft him to run in place of Betty Ireland (who they feel isn't conservative enough), it appears the Florida Republican is staying out of West Virginia's special election.

Raese, who was the Republican nominee in the special U.S. Senate race last year, but lost to Joe Manchin in the General Election, said he was flattered by the amount of encouragement he has received to run, but he is not going to get in the race.

And in other perennial candidate news, the Mountain Party's Jesse Johnson has filed precandidacy papers to make his seventh bid for office.

Raese (4.00 / 1)
I don't understand how they keep mistaking him for their golden boy savior.  This has been going on for decades now, and its more pathetic each time. Whatever contrarian spark he may have once represented has long since dissipated. Do they have the memory of a goldfish?

simple answer: money (4.00 / 1)
Raese has long financed GOP causes in the state and can pay for his own campaigns.
Now that it's a lot harder to openly have the party bankrolled by Blankenship (though I suspect he had a big hand in the outside groups last year), the WV GOP needs a new sugar daddy.

MP's JJ (4.00 / 2)
After the abysmal showing in the Senate special election, it is disappointing to see Jesse Johnson running yet again.

The Mountain Party will lack credibility until someone other than Jesse Johnson runs.

looks like Jesse has a challenge this time (4.00 / 1)
Bob Henry Baber filed to run against him for the MP nomination today.

primary (0.00 / 0)
Anyone have any background about him?

That'll be fascinating to see how the Mountain Party does with a special election primary.

It could be a good thing for the party, if it leads them to GOTV for the members, or it could turn into a real disaster if their primary winner emerges with a really small number of votes.

No primary (4.00 / 1)
The Mountain Party won't have a primary for thier gubernatorial nominee.  There's an obscure section of law that says a party (D, R or M) that gets less than 10% in the last race for governor can nominate their candidates by convention rather than primary.  The Mountain Party is choosing to hold a convention.

Thanks for the info. (0.00 / 0)
Then... does the filling of a second candidate trigger a convention that otherwise would not have happened?

Conventions (4.00 / 1)
No.  The convention would happen regardless of the number of "precandidates" in the party.  If no one had filed precandidacy, they would still have a convention and choose a nominee.  Conversely, the convention could choose a nominee who is NOT Johnson or Baber to run for Governor.  No paperwork has to be filed to run in a convention.

Hey Democrats! (4.00 / 2)
Hey Democrats! PLEASE don't make me vote for Jesse Johnson again. Nominate a REAL candidate this time. (You know... someone wholly unlike those who might become the only Democrat to vote against repeal of DADT.)

true (0.00 / 0)
If we don't than who will?

That's why it's imperative for progressives to focus their efforts on the primary process and get a decent nominee.

Governor of West Virginia (4.00 / 1)
Ahhh come on John. Give good ole West Virginia a chance to get some of her money back.

Raese as Gov. (4.00 / 1)
I have no idea if this is the reason, but I heard he refused to run for Gov. because then he'd have lots of pressure to move the family to Charleston if he won... as a Sen. no one would pay any attention to where the rest of the family lived.

Raese won't run (0.00 / 0)
He wouldn't have to move if he lost again as he always does.
