Big Daddy Sen. Robert C. Byrd

Protecting Women's Health

Sen. Gillibrand has harsh words for those, like Rep. Rahall (WV-03) who support US House bill HR3. Her admonishment equally applies to Jeff Kessler's ill-conceived SB443.

Protecting Women's Health

Clem Guttata :: Protecting Women's Health
Transcript:
"There is no doubt that these bills show a heinous disregard for the health and well-being of women in America.  It is a tax on all women who want access to a full range of reproductive health care.  It undermines the woman's ability to make her own decisions, the most important decisions in her life, with her and her doctor.

This is a bill that raises taxes on small businesses and doesn't allow small businesses to make decisions about what's best for their employees in terms of having a full range of reproductive care.

This election was about the economy.  So I do not understand how this Republican Congress can move from that mandate to create jobs, to create opportunity in this country, towards how do we undermine women's reproductive health? This is an egregious example of not only overstepping, but a misjudgment of what the American people want.

If the Republican Party doesn't believe that 51 percent of America deserves equal rights in this country, they will have a fight from at least the people standing behind me and many, many more."

Thanks, I corrected it.

That's one of my favorite typos. He's the WV Rep. I think the most of, so naturally I keep wanting to put him in the #1 district. ;-)

Rahall (4.00 / 1)
Sometimes he's #1 in our hearts, but he's at the bottom of the rankings lately with these anti-women votes. I hope Mrs. Rahall and Mrs. Kessler are making their spouses sleep on the sofa.

When a man embarks upon a crime, he is morally guilty of any other crime which may spring from it. Sherlock Holmes.

Doubt that seriously. WVFL have been major supporters of (0.00 / 0)
Kessler.

Is his wife part of WVFL?

Not that I know of. He always uses the Catholic church (4.00 / 1)
as his excuse, although there are plenty of pro choice Catholics in WV.  Karen, Spike's squeeze and Melissia Atkins were regulars in his office. They do endoresement mailings for their candidates.  This bill probably came directly from the Right to Life headquarters.

Like Mollie Ivins used to say,

You have to dance with them what brung you.

SB443 is outrageous (4.00 / 4)
And it may have sunk my support for Jeff Kessler as Governor. Although he has been absolutely stellar on LGBT equality, SB443 goes too far.

I am willing to accept reasonable pro-life positions. Heck, I had to with Congressman Mollohan for many years (except for his disastrous vote on the Terri Schiavo bill).

It's one thing to co-sponsor a bill like SB443 when you are a mere member of the US House of Representatives. It's quite another thing when you do it as Acting Senate President (or even WV Senate Judiciary Chairman).

Jeff Kessler bungled this one, and the intent of the bill clearly violates Equal Protection.

slightly OT: cafeteria style (4.00 / 3)
I'm not one to question others heart-felt spiritual beliefs. That's their personal business.

I do thing it is fair game, though, to discuss how lawmakers apply personal beliefs to the public policy arena--that's no longer just a personal matter.

In that vein, part of what really bothers me about the shadow of the Catholic Church in the equality debates is... there's no equally strong advocacy by US politicians in the just war principles. We could cut US military and intelligence spending at least in half if we listened to what the Pope had to say about peace (not war).

Instead, it's all about the patriarchy... to over-simplify: big on OT smiting, no so much the NT.
