Earl Ray Tomlin's Show of Weakness

Here's something to keep an eye on as the West Virginia 2011 Gubernatorial Election heats up.

How many non-essential activities will Senate President Earl Ray Tomblin, over-acting as Governor, take on? For example, how many non-essential appointments will he make and how many new positions will he create?

This week Tomblin has created a special new task force stacked with executives and lobbyists for chemical or energy companies-- Tomblin's new "Marcellus to Manufacturing Task Force". There is one token labor member and one token environmentalist assigned to this twelve member task force, but no one representing citizens at large or surface owner's rights.

If Tomblin was more confident of winning elections in May & October he could patiently wait for a term as a legitimate Gov., not an "acting as" one, until he installed his hand-picked favorites into multi-year positions.

This move looks like a desperate attempt to buy off some votes.

Never Quite Understood (4.00 / 2)
Our natural resources are HERE.

You can't move a coal mine, timber, or a gas well to China.

I've never understood the mindset of our legislators that the proper thing to do with resource businesses is to pave the way to allow them to keep pay low, pollute our state, and not pay any taxes.

In these tough budget times, and with the vast sums that the drilling may generate for the drillers why don't our legislators think of it as an opportunity to GENERATE revenue to help us. State employee pensions and OPEB benefits and finishing Rt 35 w/o tolls come to mind right away.

Also the water these folks are sucking out of streams belongs to the public. How about some big time compensation there???

I go out fishing or hunting and I can't catch over my limit but a gas company can pump the whole damn stream dry?? Makes no sense.

offensive interference (4.00 / 1)
Yesterday there was a public hearing in the House chambers over the proposed tobacco tax hike. Tomblin opposes it because, well, you know, cigarette machines, Southern Amusement, all that. Anyway, at an open public hearing on tobacco you would expect to hear from the state tobacco prevention experts at DHHR. But there were no DHHR folks there. None. Standing room only but no state tobacco experts. Tomblin ordered DHHR to stay away. This is the kinda guy you're getting, people. He's the Chamber's man, the Coal Association's man, and Manchin's man. And very likely your next Governor.
