On Thursday, Planned Parenthood of WV held a rally in Charleston, West Virginia. The rally was in support of ridding anti-family planning language and cuts directly affecting Planned Parenthood from the U.S. House of Representatives HR1, the Full-Year Continuing Appropriations Act of 2011, once it hits the Senate.
Reps. McKinley, Rahall and Capito voted for this bill.

Excellent! (4.00 / 1)
Thanks for posting.

As much as I dislike Capito, her vote surprised me. She's pro-choice only when convenient for her since she puts women's lives below political ambition and ideology

West Virginians are not pro-choice (0.00 / 0)
We are one of the most pro-life states, and West Virginia Democrats and independents are evenly divided. So it is no surprise when any WV politician votes against choice, especially when other issues are involved. Maybe it is time for West Virginia liberals/progressives to think about whether sacrificing progress in other areas is worth it.  Persuading our fellow voters, not just our politicians, would have to be our goal, in any case.

There are times we have to support the anti-choice -- I don't think any of these asshats are "pro-life" -- candidates as the lesser of bad candidates, but I'll be damned before I throw women under the bus and say their issues should be sacrificed so we can make gains on other issues.

I am a woman.  I am a woman who was 17, unmarried, and pregnant in West Virginia before abortion was legal anywhere.  It is not a solely Catholic or fundamentalist issue, nor solely a male control issue. Not all women who think abortion is wrong think so because men bludgeoned them into thinking so. Calling half the population of West Virginia names and condemning their views, including half the Democratic citizens, is not very productive.

There are many issues that are causing more misery for more people. I'm not going to feel thrown under the bus if we concentrate on those issues, and support the candidates and legislators who are strongest on them regardless of their stance on abortion.  Most who are strongest on them are not going to be extreme on abortion anyway, and throwing out the ones who are in the center (yes, there is one, and most people are in it) is counter-productive.

Let's look at Kessler. He not only votes on the forced birth issues, too often he is the chief sponsor, even calling for unnecessary ultrasounds as part of the way to control women. What can be more intrusive than making a woman have a baby if she doesn't want to. As much as I care about mountains, they ain't people and women are.

Contact Sens. Manchin and Rockefeller pronto (4.00 / 3)
It's really important to let Manchin and Rockefeller know you support family planning and preventive services, like breast, cervical, testicular, and STD/STI screenings, ect, that falls under the umbrella of Title X programs. Plus funding for contraception. As progressives, we do not want the anti-family planning language embedded in this or any other future US budget bill. Title X does not cover abortion! Tell ALL your pro-life friends. It keeps abortions from happening in the first place!!!!
