Hey Capito, people hate your vote to end Medicare

From Ezra Klein at Washington Post's Wonkbook:

You know what's not popular? Reforming Medicare such that beneficiaries "receive a check or voucher from the government each year for a fixed amount they can use to shop for their own private health insurance policy." According to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll, 65 percent of Americans oppose the idea -- about the same number who dismissed it in 1995. And if they're told that the cost of private insurance for seniors is projected to outpace the cost of Medicare insurance for seniors -- which is exactly what CBO projects -- more than 80 percent of Americans oppose the plan.

But it's not just sweepingly ideological reforms that are unpopular. Cutting Medicare polls poorly even if you leave out the details. Almost 80 percent of Americans oppose Medicare cuts in the abstract, while 70 percent oppose Medicaid cuts. Slightly over half of the country wants the Defense Department left alone. The only deficit-reduction option that is popular? Raising taxes on the rich.

There's a group in Asheville called the Blue Moon group as in (4.00 / 1)
once in a blue moon and a bakery.  Both sides of the abortion debate have come together to find common ground.

The above article was written in 2005 and they are still meeting.  I had the pleasure of hearing one of the founders speak.  I don't know why this can't work in more places or even attempted.  The number of abortions could be cut drastically with education and access to birth control.

Kathryn Kolbert, who argued (successfully) Planned Parenthood v Casey spoke at a Roe v Wade gala several years ago.  She said she was no longer fighting for abortion rights but for education and access.  I was shocked when I heard her say this but I can now understand where she's coming from.

This isn't where I wanted to post. (0.00 / 0)

On this issue Capito R-WV02 makes McKinley R-WV01 look sane (4.00 / 1)
And I thought was would be difficult to accomplish. Your sorority sisters must be proud of you, Shelley.

I was thinking maybe Gaston Caperton is going to run against her. (4.00 / 2)
At first I thought Manchin, but now I'm leaning towards a Capito challenge.

I like Gaston (4.00 / 1)
I'd hope he'd run against Manchin but if he wants to run against Capito, I'd say go for it!

A serious challenge to Capito is long overdue (0.00 / 0)
She squeaked into office purely due to the unpopularity of her opponent Jim Humphreys in 2000.

Since then, she's been allowed to get entrenched with no effort to challenge her (many suspect due to the longtime friendship of the Moore and Manchin families - lord knows it wasn't because of any real accomplishments in office).

There's never been a strong challenge to her reelections. Anne Barth was a great candidate and did her best in 2008, but she never got the help from the state party that she deserved.

Capito's votes on Medicare and mine safety are inexcusable. Voters should demand that the Democratic Party mount a serious challenge to her in 2012.

If Caperton isn't interested, then maybe it's time for Bob Wise to reapply for his old job.

2006 (0.00 / 0)
That was the year to beat Capito:

1. congressional page scandal - she was on the 3-person oversight board
2. nat'l headwind in Dems favor
3. Blankenship backlash against GOP in WV

But,

1. Callahan got no help from the DCCC

I liked Barth, but her campaign never seemed to catch fire. Callahan's needed a makeover too, but again the headwind.

If a serious person ran against Capito in 2012 they would have some things going for them.

1. this Medicare vote could be hugely helpful
2. redistricting could help shake things up
3. and why not challenge Capito - even if you lose you can build yourself up for a rerun in 2014. Capito will probably run for US Senate then
