PPP finds the acting governor 15 points ahead of his nearest primary challenger in their latest poll. Senator Jeff Kessler comes in at 5% and Arne Moltis get 1%.

On the Republican side, Former Secretary of State Betty Ireland earns 31%, while teabagger favorite Bill Maloney comes in at 17%. The other challengers were stuck in single digits.

PPP will release results of general election match-up tomorrow.

The firm also polled the Republican primary for president in W.V.
West Virginia marks the first state where we've found Donald Trump leading the GOP Presidential field- he gets 24% there, tying him at the top with Mike Huckabee. Sarah Palin is third with 13%, followed by Mitt Romney at 11%, Newt Gingrich at 9%, Tim Pawlenty at 4%, and Michele Bachmann and Ron Paul at 3%.

and on that birther stat teased yesterday:

Trump is riding the birther train to his lead in West Virginia. Only 22% of Republican voters there think Barack Obama was born in the country to 53% who think he was not and 26% who are unsure. With the voters who think Obama was born in the US Trump gets just 15%, putting him in third place behind Huckabee and Romney. But with the folks who think Obama was not Trump gets 30% putting him 8 points ahead of Huckabee and allowing him the overall tie.

Now that we know that the crackpot birther theory is a driving force in the W.Va. Republican electorate, it would be interesting to see what self-declared "moderate" Republican figures like Shelley Moore Capito and Betty Ireland think of the issue. Would they be more interested in coming down on the side of reality, or would they prefer to remain appealing to an increasingly extremist base?

Manchin is getting his way......again. (4.00 / 1)
Even after months in the US Senate where he is largely ignored and ridiculed by his own party, he has orchestrated  the biggest scam in WV political history by not appointing himself in the first place.  What a waste of taxpayer money to go through the motions of holding "Special Elections" when our state can least afford to hold them.  First we had the primary for Senate seat, then we had the general for Senate where hardly anyone participated.  Now we'll have the same thing all over again for what?  A one year term only to do it all over again. Insanity concocted by MOJO if you ask me. Robert C is rolling in his grave and has been for six months now, give the man a rest.

Opposition to Manchin/Earl Ray splintered (4.00 / 2)
Tomblin is only polling 32%. Hardly a decisive mandate. Had a clear challenger emerged from the pack, beating him wouldn't have been out of the realm of possibility.

Unfortunately, that hasn't been the case. When the first polls came out showing Tomblin and Tennant close, with Perdue a strong third, the opposition should have coalesced around either Tennant or Perdue.

Instead we got nonsensical decisions, like the unions throwing their support around the nonentity Thompson and so on.

So now we're probably stuck with the uninspiring choice of Earl Ray vs. Ireland.

is there a lick of difference between ERT and Ireland? (0.00 / 0)
if ERT wins the nomination, I'm voting Mountain Party; I don't care who they nominate; has to be better than ERT or Ireland

No change here... (0.00 / 0)
I voted Mountain Party both times that Manchin ran for governor, so won't hesitate to do so again if ERT wins.
