WV for a Moratorium on Marcellus Rally at State Capitol

An anti-fracking rally took place at the State Capitol Monday put on by West Virginia for a Moratorium on Marcellus (WV4MOM). Over a dozen people spoke, from those affected by this controversial means of gas extraction personally to community leaders and politicians concerned about it and health impacts on communities where it's happening. Other issues of concern included environmental and property damages and devaluation associated with the drilling, not to mention damaged roads, traffic, radioactive mud and water, and fish kills. That is just to name  a few of the negative consequences of fracking the Marcellus Shale aka playing Russian roulette with your health, well being and this state's economy like another certain industry which shall remain nameless. A decent sized crowd turned out from all across the state.

Rose Baker of Wetzel County Action Group, who is directly affected by the drilling, said:

"This natural gas boom is coming at a huge cost to the people of West Virginia. It is a life changer to people who live near these industrial sites.

Air pollution, water pollution, noise pollution.

I'm sure that one hundred years ago when the minerals were severed from the land, drilling thousands of feet into the ground and pumping thousands of gallons of chemicals underground was not imagined.

The regulations we have in place today were written for a different era for oil and gas extraction. We need to put a stop to the destruction of West Virginia and get stronger regulations in place before it's too late."

When citizens unite behind an apparent injustice (4.00 / 1)
anything can happen and often does.  The frac gas phenomena has taken many states in our country by surprise.  This rally was genius as it forced the acting governor's hand to do something instead of nothing.  What he actually accomplished with the emergency rules is up for debate but overall it was a less than stellar performance by someone who's been in charge for quite a while now.

And now we must (4.00 / 1)
continue to unite and let people know there IS something they can do. We must insist that the "select committee" listen to the people affected and come up with strong protective regulations in spite of the wailing of the gas industry and the empty threat that "they will go somewhere else".

Screw the Moratorium. Ban it altogether! (4.00 / 1)
THE TRUTH IS THIS FOLKS, WATER IS A REQUIREMENT FOR ALL LIVING THINGS TO SUSTAIN LIFE. CLOSE TO HALF OF THE WATER USED FOR FRACKING STAYS UNDERGROUND... FOREVER. IT TAKES MILLIONS OF GALLONS TO FRACK ONE WELL.

EVEN IF WE DID GO GREEN WITH HYDRAULIC DRILLING (RIGHT NOW WE INJECT WITH CANCER SOUP AKA FRACKING CHEMICALS) WE ARE STILL USING FAR TOO MUCH WATER FOR THIS, WHICH, AGAIN, WILL BE FOREVER LODGED UNDERGROUND. LODGED UNDERGROUND NEVER TO RETURN TO THE WATER CYCLE EVER AGAIN.

THINK FUTURE: DROUGHTS, FIRES, AND WORLD OVERPOPULATION AND NOT ENOUGH CLEAN WATER TO GO AROUND.

EVEN IF WE REGULATE WE ARE STILL PLAYING RUSSIAN ROULETTE WITH WATER AQUIFERS, AIR, ANIMAL AND PLANT LIFE, OUR HEALTH AND SO MUCH MORE EMPLOYING THE PRACTICE OF HYDRAULIC DRILLING AND FRACKING BECAUSE WHO CAN SAY WHAT WILL GO WRONG SINCE MANY THINGS HAVE THUS FAR, SUCH AS GAS LEAKS, EXPLOSIONS, RADIOACTIVE MUD SPILLS, FIRE WATER, FISH KILLS, DAMAGED ROADS, TRAFFIC, PROPERTY DAMAGE, HEALTH PROBLEMS, ECT, ECT, ECT.

MARCELLUS SHALE DRILLING IS A GREAT IDEA, BUT TOO RISKY FOR WEST VIRGINIA AND ITS PEOPLE... EVEN THOUGH IT WILL CREATE LONG-TERM, GOOD PAYING TEMPORARY JOBS, NOT TO MENTION A GREAT DEAL OF POVERTY AFTER ALL THE DRILLING IS DONE AND OVER WITH.

LET'S REGULATE THE MARCELLUS WELLS ALREADY FRACKED AND PUT AN END TO THIS PRACTICE BEFORE IT GETS REALLY OUT OF HAND AND DOES MAJOR COSTLY DAMAGE TO THIS STATE (WHICH IT ALREADY HAS SOME)LIKE ANOTHER CERTAIN INDUSTRY-COAL.

BAN THIS CONTROVERSIAL MEANS OF DRILLING FOR GAS. IF SOMETHING CAN GO WRONG, IT PROBABLY WILL.
