Have you called McKinley, Capito or Rahall today?

Have you called your U.S. Representative today?

That was the request made by President Obama last night, asking all of us - the voting public - to call our representatives and ask them to use some common sense and compromise on the debt ceiling. (And before any of you get angry about how far right all of the compromises are, I agree with you. But I think going into national default has the potential to be a whole hell of a lot worse.)

I've actually been calling my representative's office for more than two weeks; it didn't take a crystal ball to foresee the Republicans are looking for the nearest cliff to drive us over.

And I should say that I didn't ask my representative to wake up and be reasonable, I told her - or at least I told the staffer who answered the phone.

This is an easy, but very important, thing to do. And here are the numbers:

McKinley 202-225-4172
Capito 202-225-2711
Rahall 202-225-3452

If you get a busy signal, that's a good sign - so keep trying!!

The House servers have been slammed, apparently. I tried several times last night, and several times during the day today before I finally got to the email page for Rep. McKinley.

Also sent email to Sen. Manchin last night. Emailed White House too.

Doubt it will do any good. Feeling very pessimistic. The workers are going to take some major hits.

Calling is better than email (4.00 / 1)
The problem with email is that it's easy for email blasts of form letters to be sent out (I know this first-hand, since I get so many requests asking me to sign onto some form letter).

Taking the time to call and talk to a real, live person is still the way to go.

And I understand your pessimism. One person, you're right - it takes collective action! I'm going to call again today, just to continue to drive the point home.
