Manchin and Capito

My guess is State Sen. John Unger was willing to take on one powerhouse in the state to try to oust Shelley Moore Capito, but was unwilling to take on two, especially when one is the head of his own state party. I still think Unger could have won and he made a huge mistake by not filing. In the day to day aspects of a campaign it's probably hard to look beyond the immediate obstacles and to see the big picture of the wave that is likely to hit nationally in 2008. Unger had strong DCCC support, due in large part to his own efforts, but thanks in no small part to the hard work of people on this blog and within the DCCC organization. While I don't speak for the DCCC, it's probably safe to say he's disappointed them as he's disappointed us. But David didn't have to face two Goliaths or he might have wavered too.

On a personal level, I really like Joe Manchin. He's charismatic and he can be generous with his time in listening and connecting to people.

That said, his support of Capito, cloaked in "bipartisanship" but really because of long family connections, makes him look really bad on a national level with the Democratic Party. He's too popular in the state becaue of his personal appeal, but I don't think he realizes how this hurts any national aspirations he has. The transcript scandal and the WVU coaching scandal are embarrassments, but the national party could discount those as a family matter and a local issue. However, this involves party loyalty. To the party, that is another matter entirely.

The timing (4.00 / 1)
You make some cogent points, Carnacki. But I do not think they add up to enough to justify bailing out at the last minute.

I don't care if Joe Manchin married Shelley Capito, that is no excuse for Unger abandoning a field cleared for him at the last minute.

Anne Barth is going to have to deal with the consequences of Unger poisoning the well. Unger burned the DCCC and everyone else who came out early for him. And it is going to be really hard to convince folks to reinvest in this race after Unger walked away with around $300K of their money.

He had the field cleared for him. He had a nice start raising money. The tide seems to be with him. And he bails because a Dem governor who is never going to publicly oppose him doesn't kiss him passionately enough?

I just don't buy it. It may be true but it is not excusable.

Now Barth is pressed for time to organize, faces the devaluation of the district in national fundraisers' eyes, and has to walk a thin line to avoid an intraparty split.

Capito could not have written a better script to cruise to reelection against the national tide.

If Unger was going to bail, he should have done so earlier.

I agree with you. Manchin doesn't do a great deal for (0.00 / 0)
any candidate.  The race looked no different yesterday than it did six months ago.

So what does happen to the money? (0.00 / 0)
Will he return it?  I just went back through the Unger posts here and on Kos when you were asking for donations.

This is exactly why I don't like Unger.  A lot of people went out of their way for him and a lot of people donated hard earned cash.  If Whiney Boy can't take the primary he would never be able to stand up to Capito in the general.  You asked me if I wanted a Dem to represent that district, I hope you are going to ask Unger that question now.

As far as the argument as to whether he's a progressive, let's watch this session and see what he does.

Heck, I often wonder if you're a progressive. I know you're anti Unger but that's about all we ever hear from you.

Who cares what I am? (0.00 / 0)
It was Unger I wanted you to question.

You always turn to personal attacks when you don't like what I say.  You can spin this one with Unger any way you like, but it doesn't change facts.  It's just like that voting record of Unger's.

You don't like Unger personally (0.00 / 0)
You harp on it and nothing else. You show no interest in anything else but that. You turn everything into a personal attack on him while you give Capito and rightwingers a free ride and you wonder why I respond the way I do.. Ask your own questions of Unger. I don't owe you a damn thing.

And let me know who you're supporting so I can RAG on you and your candidate non stop just like you've done.

I give Capito a free ride??? (0.00 / 0)
You ignored all the evidence about what kind of person Unger is.  You knew how he used gays in his last election, you read the form he filled out for the Family Values people, yet you urged people to donate to his campaign. Yep, this is an attack on Unger.  He's a real champ! Now look at this race.  What a mess.  And you bear a part of that responsibility.

Whining about Manchin is crazy.  Remember Dems for Underwood?

You oughta take a little trip outta that panhandle.

MadAnne (4.00 / 1)
And you bear a part of that responsibility.

And I feel like shit for it.

I wanted to win. I looked at his numbers in Berkeley (65 percent) and Jefferson (67 percent). Every time we met with him, Clem and I brought up the issues important to us with the hope that it'd be easier to convince one person on equality for gays, reproductive rights, etc., than to convince all the right wingers in the district. We honest to God tried.

Before I threw in my support for Unger, I tried to draft Christy Hardin Smith of Fire Dog Lake. She'd be the perfect progressive candidate for West Virginia. She didn't want to do it. So I looked at the math and that's what I saw could defeat Capito.

After so many election defeats out here, I just wanted to win. And I feel like shit about it now.

those feelings (4.00 / 1)
I can feel that angst coming through the screen. Hope it can become transformed into even more thought and action to make the people of the 2nd proud of the person who represents them in Washington.

Regarding the contributions (0.00 / 0)
I think he should return the money to donors. My contribution was for this race, not some hypothetical race in the future.
