Capito and Higher Education

The Daily Mail today reported in a short that Rep. Shelley Moore Capito (R-Bush/McCain) will be the graduation speaker at Kanawha County's adult education graduation this weekend.

I would like to congratulate the graduates on their hard work, sacrifice, and accomplishment. There is little more satisfying in life than the recognition and accomplishment of furthering your education.

Ms. Capito got on the help students bandwagon after the crushing defeat of the Republican party in congressional elections in 2006. She found it in her moral fiber to vote with the vast majority of Democrats to undue damage done by the outgoing Republican congress in 2006.

Some would say that's laudable, I suppose. But is it really worth a pat on the back when you know the following?

Capito voted three times for the Republican fiscal year 2006 budget, which included a $12.7 billion cut for student loan programs, the largest ever. Capito even voted against a Democratic proposal that would have restored the funding cut. She opposed a measure that would have cut student loan rates in half for financially disadvantaged students. Students taking out loans would have had the lower rate locked in for the life of their loans, saving many students thousands of dollars.

From the Daily Mail,

"These now successful adults are ready to continue their education, seek better employment and be involved citizens of their communities," said Laura Wilcox, adult education county coordinator.

Ms. Capito, I agree. These adults are ready to continue their education. Why have you made it harder for them to do so?

Typical Capito doubletalk (0.00 / 0)
Say one thing, vote the opposite.

When a man embarks upon a crime, he is morally guilty of any other crime which may spring from it. Sherlock Holmes.

And certainly no press releases about the votes (0.00 / 0)
She couldn't even find a way to spin the votes as saving WV taxpayers from bloated federal programs because the $40 billion in cuts she voted for were to student loans and Medicaid.

Of course the day after (Scroll to December 20, 2005) the second of three votes she was able to tout her  support of grants to combat homelessness.

Hey Shelley, don't you think you'd have fewer press releases about grants to combat homelessness if you had more courage to vote in favor of fully funding federal education programs?

Argh (0.00 / 0)
She did have the audacity to claim that she was part of the solution two years later when Congress actually had to permit the Dept. of Ed. to BUY loans from the private market so the market itself would not collapse.

Her votes were so bad in 2006 that she had vote in 2008 in favor of the FEDERAL GOVERNMENT bailing out the industry for which her votes were cast.

When she was keynote speaker (4.00 / 1)
at a big WV Board of Education dinner here in Charleston several years ago, the reception was tepid and she was confronted by a contingent of war protesters as she ran to her van.

Someone should leaflet the upcoming affair letting folks know in a few short phrases just how bad she really is on education.

I'd do it but I'm supposed to attend a wedding in Ohio this weekend.
